If she hadn’t lost her sunglasses, she’d be sitting there wondering if the kiss at the end of his message meant anything. She had to forget the sunglasses and she needed to put some make-up on, and fast. After no sleep, she was well aware that she looked like the walking dead. A bit of mascara and blusher would fix things. She ran into the bathroom and stopped dead with a grimace. Her dark glasses stood out on the white toilet seat. She couldn’t remember leaving them there but she must have done. Glancing behind her, she could see she was alone. After applying a bit of make-up, she picked them up and put them on.

As she locked the door and left, she went to walk around the building, passing the church to reach the car park. A forensics van pulled up and a woman stepped out. She said hello as she headed to the vicarage.

Maeve pulled her keys from her little bag and pressed the central locking button. As she went to grab the door handle, she stopped just shy of stepping onto the dead crow on the tarmac. Had someone left that for her to see?
