BRIEFING ROOM

I choose to stand to deliver my first briefing as SIO, so that I can walk around. I’ve already told them of my appointment. I haven’t explained why. I assume they already know, but I am, of course, not authorised to talk about it.

It seems like minutes ago I was back in the forest.

Seconds ago I was closing the door to the car.

Everything is happening so quickly.

Get into character, Bastille.

‘We’re now looking at two cases,’ I begin. ‘Although it’s early days I believe them to be linked. Sadie and I have identified several ANPR reads of the perpetrator’s car: an Oxford green Mini Countryman, with this registration.’ – I tap on the piece of paper I stuck to the whiteboard – ‘We think the human remains in Hatfield Forest relate to another killing, by the same man who raped and murdered Felicity on the 18th. As I said, we’re waiting on a full analysis, but I want you all in the loop.

‘This second deposition site contains highly decomposed remains being looked at by Wolfgang Krüger and his forensic team. We also found a diamond engagement ring in the ditch where the remains were dumped. Again, we are awaiting analysis.

‘I would also like thorough visual searches done online, through social media, whatever you can find, to determine if any of Felicity’s contacts have this facial feature of particularly dark, hooded, or irritated eyes. This relates to the DNA profile found on the cardigan, which I find compelling. Make a note of anything you find.’

‘Actually, one of her friends looked a little like that,’ Heather says.

‘Really, who?’

‘But he was more thin. Not muscular.’

‘Thank you, Heather. It’s a good point – perhaps he was wearing oversized clothes,’ I reply, shaking my head. ‘Regardless, I strongly believe there is a connection from the killer to the garments found on Felicity’s body, and therefore I think linking that DNA profile found in the genetic material – the tears, if that is what they are – relates to our man. What I’m really worried about is that he’s killed before – at a glance Krüger predicts the remains are three months old. So it’s likely to happen again. Obviously we can’t let that happen.’

The room is silent.

‘Does anyone else have any more updates?’ I ask.

‘We’ve got confirmation from three witnesses that Michael was at the party,’ John says. ‘but no one can confirm he was there later than midnight, unfortunately.’

‘That was my coup de grâce,’ I say to John, ‘thanks for reminding me.’ I look at the whiteboard. ‘Can I screencast to this?’

John dutifully jumps up and starts fiddling with the connections at the back.

‘Technical issues,’ I say, smirking.

A vague titter, but no one really responds.

I’m pretty sure people still find me awkward.

Eventually I’m able to get the picture up on the whiteboard. ‘This is him,’ I say, pointing to it. ‘This is the only clear image I’ve been able to pull from hundreds of hours of footage.

‘He keeps his hood, his face covering, on throughout the night.
