Rain drenched the streets, bucketing against the windows of every house and racing along the gutters. The bones in my knees were aching. I told myself it wasn’t arthritis, but the signs were there. Rain and cold seemed to make the pain worse.

The abductors had made no further moves over the past two days. I was still no closer to finding them or Ivy. I knew that Grimshaw had called Brent Cole down to the station to question him over her new theories. My investigation of his cousin Dale had turned up nothing significant yet. He’d had a troubled existence in jail, being involved in a multitude of fights and assaults. He’d also had a troubled childhood. I remembered I’d felt sorry for the way his early life had gone at the time I’d arrested him. Was he really capable of coldly directing a kidnap plot from his jail cell?

I’d had Senior Constable Cameron Vella keep a watch on Lori during the daytime, and I’d watched her during the nights. But nothing of note had happened. Grimshaw wasn’t happy about me wasting manpower, but she couldn’t do much about it—except report me to Bigley. Which she might do.

I’d hidden a tracker on Lori’s car two days ago. I watched her every movement. She hadn’t gone anywhere much so far.

My phone made an alert sound.

Lori was driving down towards the SkyWay parking area. The Scenic Skyway was a cable car that ran hundreds of metres above the ground, taking in views of the Blue Mountains and The Three Sisters.

The tourist attraction wasn’t running. It never ran at night as far as I knew. Nothing to see in the pitch dark of night. The parking area was almost empty.

Damn. It was going to be difficult to keep tracking Lori out in this lonely area without raising suspicion. I had to hang back and stay hidden.

What was she even doing here?

She pulled up alongside the only other vehicle.

A man exited his car and stepped into Lori’s.

Okay, that was definitely something.

Was she having a secret relationship with this guy? Lori didn’t need to sneak around, did she? She was getting a divorce. Maybe the guy was married.

Rain slashed across my view.

Damn.

I needed a clear view of the guy’s licence plate number.

Taking out a camcorder, I set the option to night vision and filmed the scene before me.

I could see a fuzzy image of Lori inside the car with the man. They weren’t hugging. Or kissing. They just appeared to be talking. Lori was throwing up her hands quite a bit. Were they having an argument,
