Chapter Eighteen
Devan
After Justin readjusts my dress, I settle between his legs, my back against his chest as we sit on the blanket and watch as the sky fills with purples and reds. The effects of what he did isnât gone. Itâs as if mini explosions are still detonating beneath my skin like firecrackers in a string, bringing life to nerve endings I never knew existed. His heart pounds against my head, and I feel him everywhere. Craning my neck, I look back at him. âAfter what we didâ âIâm still in shockâ âI think we need to make this officially real.â
His hand settles on my stomach, his fingers splayed. âI think thatâs what we just did.â
âIâm talking about telling people.â
âI agree.â He lifts my chin so Iâm looking back at him. âWe could tell your family tonight.â
My eyes open wide. âYouâd be willing to tell them tonight?â
âIs that too fast?â
I chew on my upper lip. âI donât know. Why is this complicated?â I sigh, laying my hand over his. âWhat will your family say?â
Justin laughs. âMy mom will probably ask when Iâm moving out.â
âYeah, no. Cohabitation is rushing it a bit.â Earlier today, I would have said that Justin fingering me was rushing it. Obviously, Iâm not a good judge of timing.
âSeriously,â he says, âmy parents are good people. I think their first reaction will be shock. Iâm certain they think Iâm a hermit. I havenât dated a lot since college.â
âWhy?â
âFuck.â He turns his hand so weâre palm to palm. âRiverbend.â
âI donât understand. I thought you said you always knew you were coming back to Riverbend.â
âI did. Not many women want to move to some rural town when they have career ambitions.â He quickly adds, âYour ambitions are fantastic, and they brought you back.â
Nodding, I reply, âI get it.â
âAnd once I came back, the girls I knew were either married or moved away. Iâd say Iâve gotten into a rut with friends. Itâs not a bad one. Itâs comfortable, and I havenât looked for a way out.â
âThatâs why youâre worried about Ricky?â
Justinâs chest moves as he inhales and exhales. âIâm worried that if you and I donât work out, Iâll lose you and him.â
I squeeze his hand. âHow come I never realized how sweet you are?â
âBecause you thought I was a grumpy know-it-all.â
âWell, you can be that too.â I lift my head and turn toward him. âAre you friends with your brother-in-law?â
He scoffs. âNow.â
âBut not before he came back to Riverbend?â I may have been in Muncie, but small-town news has a way of finding those with a stake in our hometown.
âNo, I wanted to kill him.â He grins. âI did punch him.â
I stifle a laugh. âBecause you saw Kandace hurt?â
He nods.
âDonât hurt me, Justin Sheers. We can work out or maybe we wonât. Just donât hurt me, and you wonât lose Ricky.â
Justin cups my cheek and moves my face closer. âI donât want to hurt you, Devan. I want to make every damn dream you have come true. I
