Chapter Ten

The week flew by despite Tessa’s pleas with the universe to stop time so she could savor every moment with Donovan. The universe must have heard her at least in part because when she’d reported to Miller yesterday and he’d examined her ankle, he’d given her another week of no dancing. She wasn’t convinced she actually needed it, but who was she to fight with a doctor? Especially if that doctor was clearly trying to keep her around for his buddy. She’d take this next week and get serious about what it was she wanted.

Donovan had made it easy for her to want him. That was for sure. During the past week—despite him working long hours every day on his case—he’d made sure to save time for her. They’d had lunch together every day, most of the time not only enjoying food. He’d also taken her out to dinner at Mountain View Pizza, a charming local restaurant/bar that served the best pizza on the planet, and at Albero’s, a more upscale Italian restaurant with unique, natural décor that made her feel as if she were dining outside.

They’d also made extensive use of Donovan’s hot tub. The woodstove and couch saw a ton of action in the living room where they’d done Olympic-level cuddling while watching TV together. It had snowed a few days and Tessa had thoroughly enjoyed watching fat flakes pile up on the ground around Donovan’s man cave. The white blanket they created filled her with New England-style holiday spirit—a spirit she’d lost living in Hawaii. The islands were always festive, but she much preferred the northern take on the season.

She’d gotten together with Aliza and Heather a few times too and met Heather’s sister, Shaina, who had happened to be with Marco at the time. Tessa had gone all crazed fan on the poor man, but Shaina had assured her that her husband loved adoring readers. Marco had been such a good sport, letting Tessa video chat with Nicole so she could meet their favorite author too.

And then there had been meeting some members of Donovan’s actual family. Landon had introduced her to his pet boa constrictor and, at Aliza’s urging, Tessa had agreed to hold the large snake on her shoulders. It wasn’t as slimy as she’d expected, but she still preferred puppies.

Christian had flirted with her as promised, right from the start, thanking his brother for bringing him something back from Hawaii. Tessa had been a little concerned when Donovan grabbed the arm Christian had thrown around her shoulders and twisted so Christian had to back away.

“Okay, okay, dude!” Christian had hollered. “I get it! Hands off her. Message received.”

Donovan had released him, a smile on his lips, but his stare still said back off.

Christian had rubbed his arm then looked at Tessa. “You sure you want to be around this kind of violence.”

“I’ll take my chances.” She’d slid her arms around Donovan’s waist. “After all, he did rescue me from other violence.”

“Ah, the lesser of two violences,” Christian had joked.
