CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
âI donât get it,â Weller said, as they crossed the A1, heading into open countryside. âI get wanting to be a journalist, I suppose â travelling the world, interviewing famous people â but the stuff Jordan was writing about, nobody cares about that.â
âSome people do,â Ferreira pointed out. âHe was getting stories in the paper.â
âThe local paper.â
âYou donât just rock up at The Times and say, hey, Iâm a fucking brilliant reporter give me a job immediately.â She slowed as she approached the edge of Elton, a moment of dislocation as she remembered she lived in this quiet, stone and thatch, hunkered-down little haven now. âYou especially donât get to do that if youâre some kid from Peterborough whose mum works at a supermarket.â
âThen why didnât he write about stuff people are actually interested in?â Weller asked, watching the fields swipe past from behind his sunglasses.
âLike what? Celebrities and all that shit?â
âItâs what the people want,â he said.
âRob, the people want to drive drunk and dump old fridges in areas of outstanding natural beauty, do you think we should let them do that?â
He snorted. âBit different, isnât it?â
âNot massively, no. If you donât put the truth in front of people, how will they ever know whatâs going on in the world?â she asked. âIf all people read is stupid magazines about which soap star has cellulite and what footballerâs bought a pet tiger, you soon get to a point where companies do whatever the hell they want and governments lie to the electorate and before you know it youâve got ââ
âBrexit?â He grinned.
âA compromised democracy.â
She was already regretting bringing him. This was the first time sheâd taken him out on a case, the first time sheâd heard him offer any opinion at length, and he was making her feel very old and very serious and she didnât appreciate that one little bit.
Should have brought Murray, she thought. If nothing else the drive would have given her an opportunity to get the lowdown on Colleenâs new bloke. Sheâd been infuriatingly discreet about him so far. All Ferreira knew was that a friend had set them up on a blind date and that he was a retired geography teacher. âNot an old bugger, though,â Colleen had said. âHe took early retirement. Heâs still got plenty of go in him.â
If Colleen kept shtum much longer Ferreira was going to resort to the nuclear option and invite her and the ex-teacher around for dinner. She didnât want to be the kind of person who held dinner parties but if that was what it took â¦
Weller was going again. âI just donât get why anyone would want to spend their whole life writing about depressing crap.â
âMaybe he felt a sense of duty to the public.â Ferreira sped up as the road began to rise, following the rolling swells of the Leicestershire wolds. âGetting to truths people donât want revealing. Itâs kind of the same as what we do except the crimes arenât as obvious as the ones we deal with.
