Later, Ruby descended the stairs and tried the front door handle again. Having checked every room in the house on her return, she moved into the kitchen, double-checked the back door and slid into a seat, running her hands through her hair, cursing her paranoia. She was convinced she’d seen Ewan going down that side passage. Was it possible she was mistaken? Or was someone covering for him?

An image of the dealer standing there, watching her, feet rooted to the spot as she’d retreated pulsed through her. It wasn’t until she reached the shopfronts that she turned back, relieved to find the path behind her empty and broke into a run. A run she didn’t break until she got back to her car.

Her anger at Ewan intensified. She’d placed herself in a potentially dangerous situation in her quest to speak with him and yet again he’d thwarted her. It was as if he was working her like a puppet, all the moves in his favour. Well, if she couldn’t confront him, face to face, she needed to find another way. She needed to get evidence, to make her sister see sense, to prove to her what he was really like. Because she was in no doubt now that something was seriously awry.

Lewis’s words rattled around her brain. Sophie taking Valium from a street supplier…

She’d read something about a Tony Garratt being arrested outside The Crown last month for drugs offences. The police were clamping down on drugs-related violence in the area. Operation Hawthorn they called it. But someone was bound to have filled Garratt’s shoes. Someone like the guy tonight.

Ruby’s mind was awash.

Sophie hadn’t gone to a doctor and requested a prescription because she was sceptical about going to the surgery, worried about them pressuring her into counselling after what had happened with Colin. Despite Ruby expressing concern, she’d adamantly refused to see a therapist after their mother died.

Lewis also said it was common knowledge in The Crown. Common knowledge! How could Sophie be so stupid? Greg was already angling for more access to the children. He didn’t live in Market Deeton, didn’t socialise there, but there was always the chance he could find out. The last thing Sophie needed was for him to use it as ammunition to question her parenting skills.

Ruby picked and pulled at her memories of the last twelve months, searching for instances where her sister might have taken something, or displayed unusual behaviour. There was nothing. She had been remarkably calm recently. Was still driving, had gone back to work, was ferrying the kids to school and back, taking care of them. She’d even insisted on reading the eulogy at their mother’s memorial service, a task that would normally fall to Ruby. Was this down to the influence of the drug?

The buzz of her phone made her jump. A text from Lewis.

Can’t tell you how sorry I am. Thought you knew about Soph. Let me know if I can help. Feel bloody awful.
