Ronan looked like a cat in a dog pound. He stood in the middle of the Court’s command station, his skin practically jumping off his body. “Why did I agree to come along on this insane mission again?”

It was a good question. When I’d told him what I planned on doing, I hadn’t even had to ask him to join me before he was volunteering himself, like some kind of knight on a white horse.

I couldn’t help but wonder if he was taking his own words about Balor and his knighthood seriously and trying to prove that he was the one I could count on. And, to be honest, I could see that he was. I wasn’t blind. I wasn’t an idiot. Logically, Ronan ticked all the right boxes.

But the heart didn’t always play by logic.

Speaking of…

“Where’s Balor?” I asked, glancing around. He wasn’t one to be late. In fact, it was one of his many pet peeves.

“He’s not coming.” Moira shot me an apologetic look. “He’s dealing with some shifter business while we go hunt down this stone.”

I exchanged a glance with Ronan. The shifter business no doubt had something to do with the rogues who had broken off from the main Pack. I’d meant to bring it up to Balor before, but I’d been so distracted by our infuriating conversation that I’d forgotten to fill him in on what we’d encountered in the church ruins.

“So,” Moira continued. “It’s just you, Ronan, me, and Duncan.”

“That’s an odd team,” I said.

She shrugged. “Duncan insisted on coming. He’s freaked out about Cormac. Thinks we can’t manage this ourselves.”

He and Cormac had always been inseparable. They were like two halves of the same coin, always a constant, always a team. I couldn’t say I blamed him for feeling the need to get his hands stuck in so he could do something himself. He would probably go crazy if he tried to wait it out here. For once, I understood Duncan.

“We’re going to take a car, and then ferry on over there.” Moira spread a map out on the table before us, pointing to our route. It wasn’t exactly the quickest way to get to Ireland.

“Shouldn’t we take a flight?”

She gave a quick shake of her head. “The Fianna have been monitoring all flights from London to Ireland. Going by car and boat is the only way to get there without being detected.”

“It’ll take an entire day. And we just don’t have that kind of time to waste.”

“Nemain can’t know what we’re up to,” she said. “Balor’s orders.”

Moira was right. Of course she was. I just hated that we had to spend our precious hours avoiding detection from the very fae who had wreaked the havoc we were trying to reverse.

“Don’t worry.” Ronan shot me a wolfish smile. “I’m a fast driver.”
