13. Nameless Stalker Skank

Lazarus finally catches up with Samantha in the department’s café, an institutional eatery serving the usual delights - hot dogs, hamburgers, lots and lots of fries, and poutine, the latter a gooey mess of french fries, cheese curds and gravy that Lazarus has never wished to even try. Lonely, unloved salads sit in plastic containers on refrigerated shelves, silently shaming the overweight who march right past them, subs and chips, colas and cake firmly in hand. Harsh florescent light glares down on all, sinner and saint alike, commanding them to “eat up and get back to work”.

Samantha has, you guessed it, one of the lonely salads on her plate and a bottle of water at hand. Lazarus sits himself down at her table, gripping yet another cup of steaming black coffee. He has already had lunch, a real lunch from home and brought to work in a brown paper bag that always reminds him of his school days.

Eyeing his cup, Samantha teases him, “You know, too much coffee will kill you”.

“So will too little,” a response which earns a chuckle. “How’s it going with the Ray Munch cold case? Last time we talked, we didn’t do much more than review my initial investigation. Guy’s murdered, shot down on Valentine’s Day. All the leads were dead ends. Still are, I gather.”

“We’re re-interviewing everyone associated with Ray and Amy, his ex, but no one has anything to add. Ray’s family all insist he was a good boy, hard working, practically a saint. The ex was a dirty slut who didn’t deserve him. Her family says, ‘what can you expect from those sorts’, whatever that means, and their little girl is an angel who wouldn’t hurt a fly. Only one possible lead came up. Did Amy ever mention a former girlfriend of Ray?”

“Not that I can remember. Anything on the file?”

“No. Nothing. The good news is that Amy is back in town. Turns out she lives in Red Deer. She came home to visit mom and dad. I ran into her when I went back to see them. Anyway, this time around Amy says …” Samantha reaches into her purse, digs around and hauls out a small notebook. She flips the pages and resumes, “… ‘I always thought it was that stalker,’ she says.”

“Stalker?”

“Yep. That was new to me, so I followed up. She says that Ray was always complaining about his ex-girlfriend. She’d follow him around, call him at all hours, that sort of thing. I asked her if she had mentioned this at the time of the original investigation. Her reply was a very helpful…” and again Samantha checks her notes, “… ‘I dunno’. Sheesh. Anyway, so I ask for a name. Another …” and this time Samantha doesn’t have to check her notes, “… ‘I dunno. Never met the skank.’ Quote, unquote. So, I checked with Ray’s other friends, his family and none of them can remember her name. Closest thing I got was from his Councillor brother, who met her only once and described her as ‘a sexy little bitch’.
