Chapter 12

Emily stared at the cup of burnt-tasting coffee in her hand and grimaced. “I really need to have a talk with whoever orders the coffee for ICS safe-houses,” she muttered.

“Why's that?” Agent Mirage asked. She sipped her own cup while balancing on her crutches in the middle of the kitchen and scrolling through the security camera feeds on the large screen opposite.

“They’re ordering the darkest dark-roast possible, for some reason, and it’s wretched.”

“Hmm,” Agent Mirage said.

Emily glanced over at her and cocked her head. “Everything okay? There aren’t any coins on the front porch are there?”

Mirage glanced sideways at her and raised her eyebrows. “Coins on the front porch?”

“I can neither confirm nor deny that I had nightmares about randomly exploding pocket change,” Emily said. She took another drink of the bitter coffee and grimaced.

“Well, that explains why the motion sensor in your room was going off all night.”

“You’re watching my room?”

“There’s no camera, if that’s what you’re worried about.” Mirage set down the remote and poured herself a coffee refill. Emily winced on her behalf.

“Well, that’s comforting,” she said. “You haven’t heard from Brent at all, have you? He was supposed to tell me if I was safe to go to work this morning. Considering my other nightmare was that hackers had broken into my bank and stolen my entire college fund… I’m interested in getting back to work.”

Mirage shook her head. “Nope, I haven’t heard a peep out of him. He’s probably being held.”

“Wait—what?” Emily set her coffee mug down with a bang.

“The detective obviously suspected he was involved, somehow, in the explosion. They can hold him for up to 24 hours while they try to figure out if they can charge him.”

“But—” Emily sputtered. “What if they figure out who he is?”

“A spy’s not much of a spy if a detective can ask a few questions and get his whole job description out of him,” Mirage pointed out. “Agent Nighthawk is more than up to the task. He’ll handle Detective Frank.”

“It’s Lark, actually,” Emily corrected automatically.

“Well, someone should tell Agent Nighthawk that. He’s got the whole team referring to her as Detective Frank.”

Emily shook her head and couldn’t help but grin. “I’m not surprised.”

Mirage looked over at her with a brief smile. After a moment, she asked, “So you’re determined to go to work?”

“Well, I’d really like to—”

“If you’re insisting on it, I’m going to have to come with you for protection.”

Oh, I see. You want to get out of the house.

“Well,” Emily said, smiling, “I definitely, totally, for-sure insist. See me insisting?”

“Great!” Mirage said, a grin stretching across her face. “I’ll go get the bullet-proof vests.”

“And I’ll try Brent one more time.” Emily swiped the agent’s phone.

Emily glanced around the call-center area of the campaign headquarters. Many of the desks were empty, and everyone who was there looked a little wary. Her supervisor hurried over.

“I’m so glad you are here. We’re never going to get the turnout we want at the rally if we don’t get this place staffed.
