Chapter Sixteen

I should’ve expected Harper to pick Rowan up before I had time to warn Willow. When I told her where I ended up leaving him for the day, she gave me the silent treatment until she told me he was home. I don’t know what she told Willow or how the exchange went. I’ve been too nervous to ask for fear of having to defend my sister. All I know is that Rowan was less than pleased when I came home. Apparently, he wanted to stay, and part of me is glad I didn’t pick him up because I don’t know how I would’ve reacted to that situation either. Would I have let him stay there? He’s never spent the night anywhere without me before. Not even when he was an infant, and my parents watched him so I could grab a few hours of sleep. The last time I gave him the okay to attend a sleepover, he lied, ran away, and found his birth mom.

The front door of the townhouse bursts open, and in walks my own mother, all 5’4” of her, carrying too many bags for the one night she’ll be staying. She came to help while I’m at a work party, or at least that’s her excuse to drill me about the interview. A forced fun outing that our bosses think will help boost office morale, when really, all it’s going to do is end up an embarrassing story for anyone who can’t hold their liquor.

“How did the interview go?” my mom asks before she’s even let go of her suitcase. I shoot her an incredulous look. Not even three minutes in my house, and she’s already started. Thankfully, Rowan seems too immersed in the video game he borrowed from Zelkova to notice.

“Hey bud, why don’t you pause the game,” I tell him for what feels like the hundredth time today.

“What game might this be?” my mom asks, slowly lowering herself to the couch beside Rowan.

“Age of Atria,” Rowan says without moving his eyes from the screen, his fingers still fluidly shifting around his controller. “Zelkova gave it to me,” Rowan adds, and I cringe. Not because he mentioned the kid but because this opens the gates for my mother to pry.

“And who is that?” she asks, looking between me and Rowan.

“He’s my uncle, but he’s my age,” Rowan says, unphased by the question.

“Zacoya,” my mother says incorrectly, I assume on purpose. “Odd name,” she adds.

“He’s named after a tree,” Rowan says, too innocent to register my mother’s passive aggression. “Just like me,” he adds with a smile. Rowan goes on to rattle off each of the Foresters’ names, one by one, counting them on his fingers as he goes.

“Rowan,” I butt in, stopping him from dropping any more knowledge bombs. “Turn the game off.” Finally, with an exaggerated groan, he presses pause and slides off the couch like all of his bones have turned to gel. I take the opportunity to turn and walk toward the kitchen.
