“Run it by me one more time,” Cromwell said.

They were both standing up now. Claire was keen to get on with her plan, but she needed her partner to be on board with it.

"Okay, listen. We know, or think, that our perp is searching for victims who have had near-death experiences. We don't know why, but for whatever reason he has, whatever his motivation is, it makes sense that if there is someone who has only just recently had one, they would go to the top of his list. Agreed?"

Cromwell paused for a couple of beats, then nodded. “Agreed. I guess.”

“Good. So, all I need to do is get myself on the news, talking about how I died, how I saw a light, saw an angel, heard music, I don’t know, but something to make whoever is doing this think that I am a person he needs to…”

“To kill?” Cromwell said, his voice low.

The bluntness of the question took Claire back a little. “In theory, I was thinking more to snatch, but yes. But we will be ready, we will be waiting for him.” She paused, looking at Cromwell with big eyes. “It’s the only thing we have got. We need to go with it.”

Claire came off the phone with Captain Harris five minutes later. She wasn’t sure he fully understood and he had his hands tied with trying to locate Ella Morgan, but he was a desperate man and sensed that this FBI agent was offering him a lifeline, no matter how fragile.

He had promised to sort ‘something out’ and get back to her.

She was shocked at how quickly he had managed to sort it out, and also at what the ‘something’ turned out to be. Twenty minutes after picking up the phone to the captain she was on the phone again, this time to the host of the most popular radio show in the area.

“And now listeners we have an incredible story for you. One that takes us from our favorite city of Kentishville to… well, to go back to our last caller and their annoyance of satellite navigation, I doubt even the best sat nav on the planet will be able to get you there. As always you won’t hear any spoilers from me, so I’ll let Jane tell you her story herself. Jane welcome to the show and thank you for coming on and sharing your amazing story with the listeners.”

In the office, standing opposite Cromwell, Claire closed her eyes, trying to get into the role of Jane.

“So, how does it feel to be back from the dead?” The host’s tone was jovial, perhaps a tad too jovial for Claire's liking but she swallowed her annoyance. The game had begun.

“Eerie,” Claire responded, her voice stammering just slightly for effect. “It… it certainly makes me look differently at things… things on this side, I guess. Makes me appreciate what I’ve got, makes me think there really is no need to get so stressed, so het up about all the trivial things in my life that I used to.
