Phoebe, u there? I need help.
* * *
Cora was waiting in her driveway when I got to her house.
âI thought youâd be at the gala until late,â she said.
âCan you tell me again what happened?â I asked as she buckled herself into my passenger seat.
âIt came off. The condom came offâ¦.â
âOkay and soââ
âEverything spilled out, okay, Phoebe! Is that what you want to hear, that Iâm a complete idiot?â
âNo,â I said. Cora was breathing hard, and I could tell she was scared.
âWell, the good thing is you are also on the pill, so the possibility of pregnancy is low.â
âBut it is possible?â She looked at me, eyes wide.
âYes, but not if we go get you a morning-after pill right now.â
âOkay,â she said, trying not to cry.
âOne more thing,â I said. âSince the condom came off, youâre going to want to get tested. Just in case.â
âTested for what?â Cora hissed.
âEverything,â I said. âSexually transmitted diseases you might have gotten fromââ
âDavid isnât sleeping with anyone else!â she snapped, tears suddenly rolling down her face.
âOkay,â I said, making a mental note to come back to this later. âWhat did David do?â
âWhat do you mean?â she asked after I parked the car outside the pharmacy. I tried to keep up with her as she raced through the automatic doors.
âI mean, where is he and why didnât he already do this with you?â
âI donât know,â Cora said before hissing, âShit! Thatâs Mrs. Telly from my momâs bunko group.â
We hid behind a wall of feminine hygiene products and waited until a woman with long, wavy hair left the store. Then we turned to walk toward the family planning aisle. It was mercifully empty, which was a relief because Cora was a wreck.
âI need one of these,â Cora said, showing me her phone. It was a link to my blog, citing the various forms of emergency contraception.
âYep, this one,â I said.
We were walking to the counter to ring it up when I heard another set of footsteps shuffling behind me. All the color drained from Coraâs face, but she relaxed slightly when she realized who it was.
David was standing there looking just as bad as Cora. His clothes were wrinkled, and his absurd beanie hung off his head a little more haphazardly than usual, like a sock only half pulled off a foot.
âIâm sorry,â he said. âIâm sorry I freaked out.â
She stared at him for a moment before nodding. It was nice to see that she wasnât running dramatically into his arms. I was proud of her for that.
âIâll justâ¦head home, then,â I said, trying to gauge whether Cora wanted me there. When she didnât say anything, I hurried out of the pharmacy. Just as I was about to open my car door, I felt her arms around me in the tightest hug sheâd ever given.
âThank you,â she said. âIâm sorry I wasââ
âItâs okay,â I told her. âGo take that. And remember what I said about getting tested. I wasnât saying it to be mean. I promise.
