“London is so dreary in November,” Daphne said to T.J. as they walked through Harrods. “In Australia, it’s practically summer now.”

“It’s warmer back in L.A. too,” T.J. told her. Harrods was certainly a classy enough store, but he’d spent all the money he cared to in New York.

Daphne shuddered. “I hate this cold wet weather,” she said. “Everything is so damp here.”

“You’d like California,” T.J. said. “We have a rainy season, of course, but most of the time things are hot and dry. I spend as much time as I can on the beach, but with the show and everything, I don’t get to nearly as much as I’d like.”

“Do you like working?” Daphne asked, fingering a silk scarf.

T.J. had never thought about it. Work was what he did. “I suppose so,” he said. “I’d rather be an actor than anything else.”

“But, darling, lots of teenage boys don’t do anything,” Daphne replied. “Take poor Eddie. All he does is drink. And the boys I know just go to school and take endless vacations and get into all kinds of lovely trouble. None of them work.”

“How much of that lovely trouble do you get into with them?” T.J. asked.

“Enough,” Daphne said. “If my parents are going to force me to live in this decadent society, they should expect me to get into the occasional mess. Do you ever get into the occasional mess, Terence darling?”

Not only didn’t T.J. get into the occasional mess, he didn’t even know anybody who did. “Of course I do,” he lied smoothly. The last thing he wanted was for Daphne to think of him as some boring creep who just happened to be good-looking. “But the studio keeps the details covered up.”

“Scandals!” Daphne exclaimed. “Oh, Terence, how simply lovely. Tell me, what was the worst, the absolute worst scandal you’ve ever been caught in? I swear, I’ll keep all the details to myself forever and ever.”

T.J. wished he had brought a scriptwriter with him. He always felt two steps behind Daphne. That was one of the things he liked about her. With Molly he knew just what was going on. They understood each other completely, which was what he usually liked best about her. But with Daphne he felt like he had to chase after her, and that gave her an appeal he had no desire to resist.

What sort of scandal would she like? Something romantic, he decided. Something romantic and forbidden.

It hit him then that the truth would do quite nicely. He knew enough to keep the most important details to himself, but nonetheless, he was pleased with the idea of telling Daphne his biggest, darkest, most dangerous secret.

“This has to be kept absolutely quiet,” he told her. “If anybody ever found out, it might cost me my job.”

Daphne’s eyes grew wide. “A real scandal,” she whispered.

“Not quite a scandal,” T.J. said. “Not yet. Not as long as nobody knows.”

Daphne nodded.

“The thing is, I’ve been quite seriously involved with one of the cast members on Hard Time High,” T.
