It didn’t take but four seconds of us walking in the restaurant before Pablo noticed us. His eyes lit up until he saw Mike next to me. Then his smile faded. He started to come toward us, but I immediately made a B-line in the other direction. I lead Mike to a table that the hostess sat us at and I didn’t even bother to look at Pablo. I made sure to position myself in a seat where I could have a good view of him.

He looked at us again as if a little hurt. I’d gone out of my way to make us look like the perfect couple, dressed Mike like my Ken doll, even driven my Porsche and parked it out front so all could see.

Good, I thought to myself and even though I knew that maybe it was a little petty and immature, he was going to pay for treating me like shit before. I looked over at Mike as he chatted with the amused server that had already appeared. He looked amazing, and the male server seemed completely taken with his boyish charms and extreme dopiness.

I tried not to notice how sexy and perfect Pablo looked in the simple white button-down shirt that he had worn. He had left it open at the collar and rolled up his sleeves again. The white shirt against the caramel color of his skin had me mesmerized. More than once I forgot what I was there to accomplish.

The whole night I tried to make a scene: laughing loud, flirtatious fixing Mike’s hair, whatever I could do to make Pablo notice how great of a time we were having. Truthfully, Mike had bored me to tears. All he wanted to do was talk about sports, which I really wasn’t in the mood for. My mind was on Pablo, though I was careful to look the other way whenever Pablo looked in our direction, I’d let out another boisterous laugh.

Mike looked at me strangely. “You into that guy or something?” he finally asked me.

“What? What do you mean?” I asked, blushing. I felt the tips of my ears burning at being caught.

“No, it’s cool, it’s just that you invited me to dinner, and you’ve spent half the time staring at that dude. It’s kind of rude.” My mouth fell open and I searched frantically for a reassuring response.

“No, not at all. I wasn’t looking at him,” I lied. I now felt awful about the whole thing. Maybe Mike wasn’t as dumb as I thought. He had been trying all night to keep me entertained and had his hands on me all night. All I had been thinking was about how Pablo was reacting to seeing it and I didn’t appreciate it. Had I turned into one of those men I hated?

“Whatever, dude,” he said, getting up and wiping his mouth. “Appreciate the food. See ya.”

Now, I felt rotten. I stood up and threw some bills on the table to cover the meal and went to follow Mike out, just as Pablo stepped out of the kitchen.
