Chapter Fifteen

When Chris got home twenty minutes later, he eased his wounded Taurus into the garage. Perhaps he was more compassionate since finding out that he was going to be a daddy, but part of him didn’t want any of his neighbours to worry. The front foyer of his home was a few hours away from that golden time of the sunset, but was still brightly bathed in light. Tossing his briefcase and jacket over a chair in the living room, a red blinking light on his home phone caught his eye.

Walking over and clicking the button, he placed his hands on his hips to hear the message from this Tom, the man who had accidentally driven into him hours earlier.

“… uh, hi Chris De Sousa? I got your number from the Sheriff’s department. My name’s Tom McMaster and I’m really, really sorry for driving into you, uh… earlier today. I hope that you’re okay, and if I can do anything, please don’t hesitate to let me know. Oh! Uh, rather than going through our insurance, if you’d be willing, y-you could just pass along the cost of the damages and I could cover it. And… and a rental car too… you know, if you were willing…”

The nervous voice on the phone gave his details, and how to contact him. Chris stopped the playback of the message and thought about it. Maybe he’d discuss it over dinner with Doug?

Not wanting to ruin the dinner surprise, Chris tidied up a little. He was pleased that it had only taken three weeks to get Doug to start cleaning up after himself. Still, the bathroom was a soaking, drippy mess, as he still hadn’t quite learned that using one’s hand to wipe the humidity from the mirror was never a good idea.

An hour or so later Doug walked through the front door. Chris gave him a quick peck on the cheek and helped him unpack. He’d sweetly brought along an assortment of sparkling waters that he explained would pair well with the meat. Now that he was with a pup, Chris wouldn’t be drinking anymore.

A little while later, over a meal of seared steak tips and asparagus, the conversation turned back around to Chris’ accident.

“Oh! So, I got an offer from this Tom, that dude who drove into me? He seems okay enough.”

“Well that’s good. What’s he got planned for you?” Doug listened intently.

“He said that he could get it fixed up pretty quickly. I’m assuming that means a rental car too. I don’t know, doesn’t seem like a bad deal actually, and he seemed pretty sorry about the whole thing.”

“Could you take him to court?” Doug asked between mouthfuls of meat. “I mean, shake him and see what falls out? I could probably ask Anna…”

Chris narrowed his eyes slightly. “No, I don’t really want to do that. He doesn’t seem like a real danger, and wasn’t drunk or anything. And besides, Officer Briggs wasn’t overly concerned with… putting the boots to him. Besides, that’ll probably get me back to work a lot faster than taking him to court will.
