Levi
The two Betas led the way through the woods, loping along in wolf form: one lean and dark, the other a rich coppery red. Levi strolled behind them as if he didn’t have a care in the world, his arm still slung possessively around Winter’s shoulders. He could feel the tightness in the Omega’s body that betrayed how nervous he was, but Winter didn’t pull away. So he understood the importance of pretending to be mated, then. Well, despite what Marshall had told Levi, the Omega wasn’t stupid. Hell, if anything, he was smart.
Levi glanced up at the sun, noting its position in the sky. Late afternoon, now. Meeting up with the River Pack would slow them down, but in a way, it was lucky. Winter owed him one for covering for them back there in the woods. Maybe now he wouldn’t ask any more silly questions about Levi’s motivation. The Alpha frowned.
The sooner he was done with this job, the better. He didn’t like lying, although he was damn good at it, and it was for a good cause. Of course, being done with this job would also mean being done with Winter.
As if he’d sensed his thoughts, the Omega looked up at Levi. His eyes were a startling blue in the sunlight, the color of a pale December sky. Whoever had named him had done well. “Doing ok?” Levi asked, thinking of the baby. They’d walked a long way today.
“Yes,” Winter answered. “Although I’ll be glad when we get there.” The Omega paused, his gaze shifting warily to the two wolves. “Thank you,” he said, barely loud enough to be heard.
Levi gave the smallest of nods. He knew what Winter meant, but it was dangerous to even hint at it around the strange wolves. “Anything for you,” he said, hoping that was the kind of thing a wolf would say to their mate. Winter blushed and looked down. They walked the rest of the way into the Pack’s territory in silence.
They entered a clearing bordered on one side by a granite hillside with a large cave. At the center of the clearing, a large man with a barrel chest fed branches to a roaring bonfire. He was older than Levi remembered, his carrot-orange hair mixed with silvery grey, but his eyes still had an alert look. His mustache was just as formidable as ever, curling up at the ends like a cartoon cowboy’s. When he caught sight of them, he stood up, his lined face breaking into an incredulous smile.
“Levi, you old sonofabitch! What brings your scraggly hide all the way out here?” The other Alpha’s bellowed greeting sent birds flapping from the trees in alarm. Clay had two volumes, as Levi recalled: loud and louder.
Despite himself, Levi grinned. “When I heard the mighty Clay had himself a Pack so close to my cabin, how could I resist?” he retorted.
The other Alpha strode forward and embraced Levi like a brother, giving him a hard slap on the back.
