Chapter 6

He didn’t expect it to hurt so much, and he isn’t talking about the fall. It seems that the moment he takes off he’s already winded, his muscles stringy and uncooperative, like he’s pushing for that extra mile instead of just starting one.

He doesn’t let his legs give up though, pushing them from the moment he’s upright. Shoots across the back lot, toward the open field far off and the trees beyond that. His backpack jostles with the canned foods he brought just in case. All that extra weight, that must be what’s holding him down, making his thighs shaky before it’s called for.

But it won’t matter, it won’t stop him. Running is what Skye does best. He’ll endure.

Keep going, he urges his muscles. Those trees seem to not be getting any closer, but it’s an illusion, he can make it.

From far behind, he thinks he hears the squeak of that bathroom door opening. Might just be his imagination he thinks, that’d be near impossible even for wolf ears, but he’s not wrong. He knows it when a cuss word, viciously spoken, announces that his escape has been found out.

Faster. He can be damn fast, nearly uncatchable. He’s never gotten so close to being claimed, but he’s had his slips, and he always gets an extra burst of speed from his legs when he needs it most. But today they don’t seem to be kicking into overdrive. They feel hollow, his nerves prickling like the wiring’s malfunctioned. Must have been the ride. They must be numb from the hours squatting on the back.

Shouldn’t do it, should keep his eyes on the trees, but he can’t help checking over his shoulder.

Liam is running for him, point blank, body pitched low, torso arched forward, eyes obscured by the fringe of his hair. There’s a blankness underneath and a glimmer of white from his bared teeth.

“Shit.” That he even has breath to swear is proof that he’s not pushing hard enough.

He tries. Asking, urging, fighting. But his muscles aren’t cooperating. He gets only a slight pick up on speed, and he knows it won’t be enough.

No choice. He slides the straps off his shoulders. He’ll regret it later, he needs those supplies, so cheap but expensive for him to replace, but he can’t be caught or it’ll mean a beating and a brutal claiming. He can’t let that happen.

So the pack tumbles loose, landing with a heavy thump, and now he’s ready to fly free.

Except it’s worse now.

His limbs feel too long, his body too airy. He’s not going faster, he’s going slower, his legs not seeming to have the strength to push against the ground the way they’re supposed to.

Must be numb from the ride. Must be.

What’s happening?

Those trees are blurring, his face crumpling with despair as he realizes he isn’t going to make it.

He lets out a wretched sound, like a sob, and tries but he knows it isn’t enough. Glancing back, the alpha is just a dark blur, no feature distinguishable from another.
