Olivia immediately knew what she had to do. Yara was out there, scared and alone. If she felt capable of swimming to shore, she would’ve done it by now. Someone was going to have to swim out there and rescue her.

And she knew it had to be her.

Brock wasn’t strong enough to make the swim. Yara was scared, and she might not trust someone she didn’t know.

Olivia was going in after her.

She began to take off her boots, not wanting anything weighing her down. She considered taking off her jacket, too, but the waters were icy cold. She didn’t want to freeze out there. Brock looked at her, panic-stricken.

“Olivia, no… you can’t.”

“You’re hurt. And you’re not a good enough swimmer. You’ll both drown out there,” Olivia said bluntly. Brock shook his head.

“No. The water is too choppy. No one should go out there. And you’re already exhausted…”

“Brock, if I don’t go, she’ll die. No one else here is going to go out there for a woman they’ve never met before. This is our only chance.”

“I can’t let you do it.”

“Brock, listen to me. We’re running out of time. If you don’t let me go now, it’ll be even more dangerous. Those waves aren’t going to slow down, and God knows how long Yara has been out there. Let me do this before it’s too late. You don’t want her to die, do you?”

“Of course not, but I don’t want to lose you too!”

“You won’t,” Olivia said forcefully. “You have to trust me. I can do this. I will do this.”

Brock wavered before taking a step back. After hesitating a moment, she reconsidered and took her jacket off. She knew from her swim a few days before that it would only make her heavier, and the swim would soon warm her up. She was going to need all the strength she could muster if she was going to get Yara back to shore in one piece.

She winced as she waded out into the water. It was cold despite the warmth of the day, but there was no time to get used to it. She dove forward, windmilling her arms against the harsh tides. It was going to be a hard swim, and it would be worse on the way back bringing Yara along with her. But at least then she’d be swimming with the tide. It was exhausting work, and salt water splashed in her eyes and ears. Olivia had to keep telling herself that she wasn’t drowning, that she was making progress. She couldn’t see much, but she hoped she was swimming in the right direction.

“Olivia! I’m over here. Please, help me.”

Olivia followed the sound of Yara’s desperate pleas. She hadn’t been in the water more than a few minutes, but she could feel her muscles aching. She still hadn’t fully recovered from the swim two days before. But she told herself she could rest once she had Yara safely back to shore. The thought of what might happen to both of them if she stopped kept her going.
