When Robin got home, Adam was still awake in bed, reading a book about World War I fighter aces.

“Sorry if I disturbed you.” Robin kissed the top of his head.

“You didn’t. Can’t sleep for whatever reason, so I’m fantasising about men in uniform. Inspired by your pinup, Biggles. How’s it going?”

“Slow. How was your evening?”

“Interesting.” Adam gave a potted account of what Victor had told him, none of which surprised Robin. “Not sure if it’s worth calling up that vicar. I e-mailed Neil to see if he knew anything about the bloke, but all he had was a name. The Reverend Charles Edmunds. He said he’d try to find out if they have a contact address for him now, assuming the bloke’s still alive.”

“If he strikes gold, can you forward the info to me? Although I’m not sure where it gets us. Sounds like Wynter wasn’t a pervert back then, anyway, just nasty. He’s no more pleasant now.”

“Sounds a right charmer. Is he getting a night in the cells?”

“Yep. While I get a night with you.” Robin stifled a yawn. “Not that I’ll be any use in the romance department. But we’ll be comfy.”

“Yep.” Adam laid down his book. “How do you know Wynter wasn’t a pervert back then, though? He may not have tried it on with you, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t molest other little boys. Or girls. Sometimes physical and sexual abuse go hand in cloven hoof.”

Robin shrugged. “I’ve been all over his record, and nothing’s turned up apart from a few points on his licence for speeding. Not even a sniff of trouble on the paedophile front, and don’t say that could be because he was never caught or never reported. I know about that.”

“Glad to hear it. Don’t forget, absence of evidence isn’t evidence of absence. Sorry, doing it again. Telling you your job.”

“I’ll set Campbell on you if you don’t behave. Remember how he sorted out Stuart?” Robin’s ex-sergeant had been an unwelcome guest earlier in the year, one who’d seemed firmly ensconced before the dog had taken matters into his own paws. “Talking of marital matters . . .”

“Oh yes.” Adam grinned. “That was what gets called a Radio 2 link. Too strained by half. Go on.”

“I’ve got a favour to ask. It’s to do with the investigation, so I wouldn’t foist it on you if you’re not willing. I’m simply pleading that you hear me out completely before you punch me.”

“That bad, is it? Selling my body down Bosie’s to fund a wider range of forensic tests?”

“The pinch hasn’t hit that much. Yet.” Bosie’s was the only gay bar in Stanebridge and a constant source of humour.

Adam sniggered. “Go on. I must be bleeding barmy, but you have my assurance I’ll listen.”

“Okay, thanks.” Robin took a deep breath. “At present, this case crystallises into several threads.”

“I don’t think threads crystallise.” Adam sniggered again.

“Smart-arse. It’s too late in the evening for you to be coming over snarky.”

“Sorry. I promise to behave myself.”

“First time for everything, I suppose.
