As all the weekends before and all that would come later, this one, too, finally gave way to Monday. And this particular Monday meant a staff meeting at work, a lunch with Pascal at his office and then an appointment with Sam Daniels that, judging from past experience, could last anywhere from one hour up to five. Troy sometimes still wondered how the hell he had become so involved with this project, but he could at least appreciate the efforts this administration was putting into making this reform a reality.

Joan, Pascal's assistant, greeted him with a smile and waved him in, gesturing towards the door to Pascal's office as she talked with someone about a guest lecture, if Troy wasn't mistaken.

When he knocked and entered Pascal's office, he was greeted with a grin and a quick hug.

"Do you want something to drink as we wait for the food?" Pascal asked him before taking his seat again and gesturing him to his usual chair.

Troy shook his head. "No, I'm good. Besides, Joan is on the phone.” He sat down and stretched his legs in front of him. “Speaking of, I heard something about a guest lecture. Should I worry about competition?"

Pascal snorted. "Unlikely. I don't mind doing one or two a year, though. Keeps me on my toes."

"I bet it does."

They made small talk about the latest news over their food, but then they moved on to the benefit at the Smithsonian and Troy shifted in his seat, wondering if this was it. If this was going to be the moment he'd talked to Jake about yesterday.

"Jeremy wondered if he didn't scare you off," Pascal told him and Troy chuckled.

"He didn't. You with your bedroom eyes fixated on your boyfriend, on the other hand…"

"Who could blame me, he looked fantastic in that suit." Pascal shrugged and pointed his chopsticks at Troy. "But I call bullshit."

Troy raised his eyebrows. "At?"

"At that being the reason for your disappearance. One may say you were just trying to avoid the media, but if I were to guess, I’d sayyou had a much more pleasant reason."

Troy probably failed terribly at hiding his smile. "Interesting theory."

"Interesting story, most likely." Pascal leaned in. "Come on, spill. Did you leave with someone?"

"Yep," he said with a nod.

Pascal grinned. "Nice! Especially considering no one caught you on camera. Now, was it the guy you mentioned before or someone new?"

Here it goes. "Actually—"

A quick knock on the door interrupted him, followed by Joan sticking her head inside.

"I'm sorry, sir, but Sam Daniels is here and was wondering if you have a minute."

"Sam's here?" Pascal got up. "We were supposed to go to the White House soon. Will you excuse me?" he asked Troy and when he nodded, Pascal followed Joan out.

He left the door open, so Troy didn't feel bad about overhearing.

"Hey, I'm sorry to interrupt," Sam was saying, "but I just got out of the meeting and thought we could have ours here, if you'd prefer. Of course I can come back—"

"No, no, don't be ridiculous, come in," Pascal told him.
