“YOU THINK I’M afraid of your dogs?” Ezekiel said. He stood with Walter on the landing in front of the entrance to the jailhouse and stared down at Baby and Muffin. “Hardly. Dogs and me get along great. Always have, always will.”

“Baby and Muffin aren’t your typical house pets,” Silas said. “If you knew them better, you’d know that.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Let’s just say they’re quite protective of me and always do what I tell them.”

Walter turned to his brother. “In other words, Sherlock, they’re attack dogs.”

Ezekiel swallowed hard. “They are?”

Walter shook his head. “Man, you’re so naive.”

“Dumb-as-a-brick is right,” Silas said. “They are, in fact, trained to attack. But if you’re both good boys and continue to do as you’re told, you’ll never have to see their ugly side.”

“You mean other than their already less-than-attractive mugs?” Walter pressed.

The dogs stared at the two men and cocked their heads quizzically, as if trying to follow the conversation.

“Please do not insult their appearance,” Silas said. “As Rottweilers go, they’re considered quite attractive.”

“Yeah,” Walter scoffed. “They’re regular supermodels.”

Silas motioned with the gun. “Please, step inside.”

Walter turned, faced the door, dropped his head, mumbled something to his brother, then waited for a response.

“You can’t be serious,” Silas said.

“About what?” Walter asked innocently.

“Trying to make a run for it. I heard what you said. You figure if you take off in different directions, one of you will get away. Let me warn you, that would not be a good idea.”

“Who said it was a good idea?”

“You don’t know much about Rottweilers, do you?”

The men stared at the dogs, said nothing.

Silas continued. “For your edification, the average human tops out at a running speed of eight miles per hour. Baby and Muffin’s top speed, from a standing start, is twenty-five miles per hour. I know this because I’ve timed them. Simple math should tell you that by the time you’re just beginning to get up to speed, they’ve already run you down. What they do after that I can’t be responsible for.”

“Well,” Walter said, “since you put it that way…”

“Precisely. Now move.”

Walter opened the jailhouse door, stepped into the room. Ezekiel followed.

The men looked ahead, saw the two adjoining cells and the man and the woman imprisoned within them, each clad in a white plastic jumpsuit.

“What the hell?” Ezekiel said.

“I’ll make the introductions soon enough,” Silas said. “For now, step ahead, then sit in front of the cell and grab the bars with both hands.”

Ezekiel walked toward the cell, then stopped and stared at Chris.

“It’s okay,” Chris said. “Do what he says and you’ll be fine.”

Ezekiel sat, grabbed the bars.

Walter turned, confronted Silas. “Fuck it,” he said. “I won’t do it.”

“Yes, you will,” Silas replied, “or you’ll die now, right where you stand.”

“Don’t underestimate him,” Carina said. “He’s serious.”

Walter turned, looked at her defiantly.

Carina stared into the stranger’s eyes. “Don’t press your luck,” she said. “You don’t want him to make an example out of you because he will. Trust me, it won’t end well for you.
