Sporting sunglasses and plain clothes, Weiss stood outside the van, which was now painted a nondescript brown, and peered carefully up and down the street. He reached back and banged his fist a couple of times against the vehicle’s metal door. “All clear out here,” he said, and with a sliding clang Keiko emerged into the sunlight, squinting as she shaded her eyes with her arm. Weiss helped her step down. He couldn’t help noticing the eerie lack of a nervous shake in her hand as he held her steady. Either this girl had nerves of steel, or she was a natural at the spy game. Or, he realized, it’s possible she has no idea what she’s getting into.

“Ready to do this, Keiko?”

“I think so,” she said, her eyes adjusting to the brightness. “Hey, another exterminator,” she added distantly, gesturing to a second van down the street.

Weiss chuckled. “There’ve been vans all up and down the block. It happens. People see our van parked outside a house, get paranoid there might be bugs in their place, and call a real exterminator of their own. I should remember to buy stock in Orkin just prior to one of our operations.”

“That’s thinking like a banker,” Keiko said, then pointed at the side of the other van. “Ever heard of Mosquito Bandito Exterminators?”

Weiss thought for a moment, then demurred. “Not really something I, uh, pay much attention to.”

“Neither have I,” Keiko concurred without listening. She seemed to brush a thought aside, then continued, “Do we need to check whether this thing’s working, or…” She tapped gently on her jacket, indicating the wire.

Weiss leaned in. “Testing, testing…Syd, can you hear?”

“No need to get quite so close to her chest, Eric,” came Sydney’s teasing voice from inside the van. “We’re picking up just fine.”

Weiss seemed abashed. “I wasn’t…,” he began, haltingly. Keiko was chuckling, enjoying his embarrassment. “I, uh…I happen to be spoken for, so…”

“You remember the plan, K?” Sydney interrupted, poking her head out into the sun.

“Yes, Sydney. We’ve been over it a thousand times….”
