Of the seven who had marched against Thebes, only Adrastus and Polynices now remained. The king of Argos fled the battlefield on the divine horse Arion, offspring of Demeter when she was raped by Poseidon. But Polynices stood firm before the walls of the city and called forth Eteocles to fight him in single combat. In the no-man’s-land between the two armies the brothers met. Polynices prayed to Hera that he might soak his hands in the blood of his fallen brother, just as Eteocles prayed to Zeus that he might pierce the heart of his sibling.
