A few hours later, Callingwood had pulled off an impressive win, Chase and I had eaten more than our share of junk food at the game, and we were back in town.
He pulled into a parking spot in front of Lush Boutique and killed the ignition. The neon pink sign glowed accusatorially at us. Going in there would be like announcing to the world that I was having sex. Not just sex, freaky sex. Or that I was masturbating, which I wasnât keen on advertising, either.
âReady?â He turned to face me, dark brown eyes glinting playfully.
Nerves seized hold of me, fight-or-flight response kicking in. The trepidation was like the first time Iâd filled my birth control prescription amplified times a million.
âNope.â I shook my head, crossing my legs. âI changed my mind. I canât go in there.â
Could I?
Chase lifted a shoulder, his expression neutral. âOkay. I wonât make you. We can leave if you want.â
Ambivalence simmered within me. In theory, I wanted to leave. But reality was a different story and he knew it. He was eerily good at reading me. But since he literally said what he was thinking all the time, I guess that evened out.
I bit my bottom lip. âI donât know.â
âIâll be right with you.â He rubbed my thigh and left his warm hand there. âIn and out. Easy.â
âBut we have to pay before we can go home.â I looked at him, cringing. âLike, I have to stand there and face another person while purchasingâ¦that.â
He cocked an eyebrow. âYou think a sex shop cashier is going to judge you for buying a little vibrator? Trust me, James. Those people have seen some shit.â
I glanced at the store through the windshield, back to him, then at the store again.
Part of me was curious. Most of me was intimidated.
It was just a store. A simple brick and glass structure, innocuous enough from the outside. But as for what it containedâ¦
Chase squinted, leaning over the steering wheel. âLook,â he nodded at the window, âCarlâs working the register today. Heâs super nice.â
âYou know the cashiers by name?â
âIt was a joke,â he said, laughing. âHow much of a perv do you think I am?â
I reached over and poked his arm. âI plead the fifth.â
âIf you join me, you have some input.â He winked. âBut I can go in without you if you want. We could make it a surprise like I said before.â
âThat sounds even scarier.â I drew in a breath and held it for a beat before exhaling. To go, or not to go? The million-dollar question.
Chase held my gaze. âJames.â He lowered his voice, intentionally doing that thing that somehow massaged my brainânot to mention other parts of my bodyâand made it impossible to say no to.
âYeah?â
âCome on.â
âFine,â I grumbled, but I was a little thankful for the prodding.
What was the worst that could happen? Other than dying of embarrassment.
