Chapter Nine
Though the sun had set, Wolf had worried for the captain at first. But Valbuena kept his sunglasses on and only grew steadier as the light faded.
He’d caught the scent immediately, the ceramic dust scent of the small versions of the hoop snakes. Part of Wolf felt bad deserting the pavilion but he knew there were enough competent people to catch two snakes. This mystery thing, this ceramic duplicate in miniature, this impossibility was not getting away from him again. He’d caught sight of the two little hoop snakes lurking just outside the pavilion. When they took off, he’d followed through the gardens in the thickening dusk, first by sight then by scent.
By the time he’d reached Harley Avenue, Captain Valbuena had caught up to him, heaving and puffing, waving away Wolf’s concern. Krisk messaged a bare minute later saying he was bringing the car, give him a direction.
South, Wolf sent back. On Eastwick now.
“Do you see it still, Alex?” the captain asked as they got moving again. At least he’d stopped wheezing.
“No.”
“Then where are we going?”
“I still smell it, sir. It’s not far ahead.”
“How can you smell anything in this part of town?” The frustration in Captain Valbuena’s voice made him sound much more predator than officer.
“I…wolf nose, sir. But we have to move.”
That wasn’t a problem for the captain. He kept up with Wolf like no one had ever been able to, running beside him even as Wolf vaulted fences and took open stretches at top speed. The ceramic snakes were still up ahead, though he couldn’t seem to close the distance.
About halfway down Eastwick, the ceramics stopped following roads altogether. They dashed out into the broken fields and made a zigzagging circuit around the Watt Khmer Palelai, maybe afraid of people spotting them at the temple.
Out the temple gates and onto South 58 th Street, Wolf started to wonder if they were going anywhere in particular at all. There wasn’t anything down this way after the railroad tracks. Was there?
“There.” Captain Valbuena gripped his arm and pointed, the cedar-vampire scent this close almost strong enough to throw Wolf off his ceramic animal trail.
Distracting, that smell. Made his heart into a pile driver against his breastbone. But he caught the flash of ceramic sheen as the little hoop snakes rolled over the tracks toward a ragged fence of mismatched materials. They hurried after them and turned the corner just in time to see the hoop snakes go up a ramp and into an odd little house, one that Wolf could have sworn shouldn’t have been there. He sent a hasty text to Krisk—
