If giving my time means anything, right on. The press says Ron Lyle digs young people and I do. But I dig going to juvenile homes, reformatories, industrial schools. The kids really need somebody to rap to, that they can confide in, and identify with. If I go rap to a kid in a regular school and I tell him what it means not to get a Christmas card from home when you're in an institution, he can't identify with that, and consequently he doesn't even know what I'm talking about.

But when you're talking with guys who're in that spot and they know you've been in that spot, too, that's different. That's why I'd rather go around to institutions. Not to change their lives, but simply to let them know that somebody is thinking about them. The average kid in an institution, his thoughts are, ‘Who cares?’ Some of them are twelve, thirteen years old. And they grow up with the attitude that nobody cares. I care what happens to them because I've been there. That's one of my hang-ups. You can't change the world, but you might be able to shed a little light on some of the problems.
