The day school started Hanna wore a pair of denim pants and a white blouse. It was the best outfit she had. Byron and Bobby walked with her to the bus stop and wanted to ride down to the school, but Hanna talked them out of that. All the arrangements had been made and her transcript had already been sent from Georgia. She was nervous, but the men had gotten her so upset with their instructions and endless chatter that by the time she got on the bus the idea of starting back to school was nearly a pleasant one compared to the ordeal they had put her through all morning.
Byron and Bobby spent the day drinking and waiting until she got back. They talked lots about painting the house and otherwise making the place more livable, but they did nothing toward that end. And when Hanna did finally get back, they were sitting in the swimming pool red-faced and red-eyed and excited. They made her tell them everything, and she did. She made herself a bologna sandwich and they all sat on the back porch while the men overwhelmed her with questions and Hanna answered as many as she could. The day had not been nearly as frightening as she had imagined it would be.
But she had homework, and Byron and Bobby promised not to make any noise. They even moved the kitchen table into her room, put the lamp on it, and made sure she was comfortable before they went to the living room and waited just in case she needed some help. And although they did not tell her, they were very disappointed that she did quite well without them. That is, they were disappointed until they eventually passed out on the front porch.
At school several days later, in her government class, sitting in the front of a row, a classmate, a girl she had another class with, put a little package on Hanna’s desk, smiled and said, “This is a little something some of us girls got you as a welcome to Ben Franklin High present,” then walked toward the back of the room. After glancing to her back, Hanna opened the package, discovering a pair of white lace panties with a split in the crotch, above which was written starkly in black, SLUT. As the teacher walked into the room. Hanna stuck the package in her purse, determined not to look around.
