“You know there are going to have to be some rules, right?” I tell him later, when we have finally get out of bed and are in his kitchen. He’s preparing spinach and cheese omelets for breakfast.

I’m sitting at his breakfast bar sipping coffee and enjoying the view. It’s great—he’s doing all the cooking while I’m just eating and piling on the pounds.

Every time he moves his back muscles stretch, and the inked lines on his shoulder have me salivating for more than food.

Dang, I’m going to be sore tomorrow and I don’t give a fuck about it.

“You do surprise me,” he chuckles as he rolls his eyes at me.

“Save the sarcasm, Thunder,” I retort. “It’s the way I do things, so you’re going to have to deal with it.”

As I stretch up over the counter to get some glasses from the shelf above, he traps me there, forcing me to look at him.

“What if we create new rules? Adapt them, make them work for both of us.”

“This is all happening so fast, Houston, and there are so many problems, thousands of them in fact.”

“The main problem is that you still don’t trust me,” he says, and he is absolutely right.

He reached the heart of the matter.

“Well, if you had taken the time to explain a few things, maybe I’d find it easier to put my trust in you.”

“Then just ask me,” he states. “Talk to me, tell me what the hell it is you want from me.”

“For starters, I want you to take it easy, be more patient with me, not try and rush things.”

“Jordania, believe me,” he says, “I’m trying my hardest to bide my time and be patient with you. Otherwise, I would’ve bitten your head off a long time ago, because you can be so fucking stubborn when you put your mind to it.”

“Ok, just remember about being patient and that’ll be a good start.” Now I think it best to steer this conversation back in a more general direction. “So, tell me why your apartment is already furnished, when you told me you arrived shortly after me.”

“Being a senior officer has its benefits.” He grins. “The officer who lived here before left everything behind. From the couple items in the dresser, I think it was female.”

As he talks, he turns to give me his full attention, and I feel we’re making progress. We’re having a normal conversation. Maybe getting to know him won’t be that hard.

“Then why were we at my place, sitting on my uncomfortable barstools?”

“If you recall, I did invite you here,” he points out. “And I told you about the magnificent view. Speaking of which, we should have dinner on the balcony this evening to admire the sunset.”

A warm rush floods through me at the thought of us sharing a meal and enjoying the view together, just like our first date in Hawaii.

“You have a deal.” I smile.

He serves the omelets and sits beside me, kissing my shoulder covered by one of his Navy t-shirts.
