Micah

An Introduction and Commentary

Bruce K. Waltke

Author’s preface

When Professor D. J. Wiseman honoured me with an invitation to contribute the commentary on Micah for the Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries, I did not anticipate the rich spiritual banquet that awaited me. Through God’s grace I hope this commentary will enable readers to share in the feast.

Many helped me to prepare the food. The NIV served as a good basic translation, and when I disagreed with it, I could almost always find what I wanted in another version. The commentary identifies some from whom I learnt. Surprisingly, I often learnt most when I disagreed. I commenced the work in an Old Testament seminar led by myself and Professor Carl Armerding at Regent College in the spring of 1984. We stretched and encouraged each other in a way neither one of us will forget.

Others helped me set the table. Here I should mention the editors of Inter-Varsity Press and my superb teaching assistant Mr John Marcott. Elaine, my wife, patiently listened to the commentary, giving me assurance that the layman could eat and enjoy the fare without suffering from indigestion. She found one of the introductory dishes, ‘date and authorship’, difficult to digest, but appreciated my difficulty in trying to summarize over a century of assiduous research in order to condense a critical appraisal of it into several pages.
