Chapter 7
âI take it weâre going in your car,â Birdie said to Twiggy as they left the station the following morning to visit the school.
âWe can hardly go in yours, as itâs not reliable and might break down at any moment.â He did quote marks with his fingers.
âExactly. And thatâs the reason I walked in today, in case Sarge saw me arrive and wanted to ask me about it.â
âIs that why you were late this morning?â
âIâd like to say yes, but I have to tell you, Iâm not brilliant at timekeeping. I was only five minutes late and Sarge hadnât started the briefing.â
âMy advice is you should try harder. Just because you have Sarge onside, which is a miracle, donât bank on it lasting. You were lucky he didnât get on to you this morning when you arrived. Our hours are flexible because of the nature of the job, but first thing in the morning, Sarge expects us there before eight-thirty.â
âMessage received and understood.â
âDonât you have an alarm clock?â
âI have three, but they donât help. But, as I said, I was still here before the briefing. Whereâs your car?â
âOver there.â He pointed to a Ford Focus.
âAnd hereâs me thinking youâd have something sporty,â she joked, knowing full well he wouldnât.
âYeah, right. With my family, chance would be a fine thing. Though I wouldnât say no to the Porsche 911 Turbo. Except theyâre very low down and with the size of thisâ â he patted his protruding stomach â âonce I got in, I might never get out.â
âNot to mention your age,â she said, smirking.
âOuch. You sure know how to hurt. But, as itâs not likely to happen unless I win the lottery, then I wonât worry about it for now.â He sighed and then grinned at her. âCome on, letâs go.â
The drive to the school didnât take long and soon he turned into the entrance.
âFingers crossed the head teacher can help us. I take it you know them?â Birdie said.
âYes, itâs Mrs Fox. Sheâs only been at the school for two years but sheâs doing a good job. You come from around here, did you go to this school?â
âNo, I went to Robert Smyth. What about you?â
âI went to the all boysâ school in Northampton.â
âDid you join the force there first?â
âNo, because I didnât fancy a busy station. Evie and I were dating at the time and as this is her neck of the woods, I applied here. I started off as a PC and then moved over to CID. This has been my only job while in the force.â
âSo, not much going on here that you donât know about.â
âYep. I know most of the wrongâuns around here. What did you think of your first day yesterday? Youâd gone before I had time to ask.â
âIt was good. I enjoyed it more than I thought. I wasnât pleased about being sent to the hospital, initially, as you know. But it actually turned out well.â
Twiggy parked in the section reserved for staff in the school car park.
