11:32 a.m.

Drayce marched with long strides to a clothing store five minutes away from the flat on foot, arriving in three. He grabbed the first pair of dark blue jeans he saw in Sarah’s size – the last pair with extra-long legs – a pair of plain white trainers, a long-sleeved black t-shirt, underwear and socks, and a thick grey jumper. As he walked to the tills, he passed a rack of winter coats, picked a black parka with a brown fur-lined hood, and paid as fast as he could. On his route back to the flat he stopped at a pharmacy to collect the toiletries Sarah had asked for.

She’d moved from the fireplace, perched on the edge of the sofa, leaning forwards with her arms crossed, as if cocooning herself from the world.

‘Got sick of the fire, huh?’ he asked.

‘Your dressing gown’s too warm.’

‘I see. Here.’ He dropped the bags on the floor next to her feet. ‘See if that lot’s suitable. And don’t blame me for the dinosaur toothbrush. They were out of the adult ones.’ He walked to the kitchen while she rummaged around in the bags. ‘You want something to eat?’

She gave him a disapproving look. ‘We ate at St Pancras. How are you hungry already?’

He shrugged. ‘I’m thinking maybe I burned a few calories rescuing you from the Thames.’

She smiled, despite her efforts not to. ‘Rescued me? You were the one who pushed me in in the first place.’

Drayce got busy in the kitchen, rummaging through the fridge and cupboards. ‘True. But, hey, can’t go back in time. All’s well that ends well, so why don’t you get changed into your new clothes while I feed myself?’

She stood up with the bag and walked into the bathroom. Drayce made three tuna sandwiches and a bowl of salad, and had just finished plating it all up when Sarah came back in wearing her new outfit, the parka tucked under her arm.

‘Feel better?’ he asked as he carried the food over to the coffee table in the middle of the living room.

‘I guess.’

He took a seat on the sofa, picked up a sandwich, and started eating. Sarah looked on, trying to contain her envy. ‘You going to eat all that?’ she asked.

Drayce swallowed his mouthful with a grin. ‘Don’t tell me you’re hungry already? You ate at St Pancras, remember?’ She joined him on the sofa and flashed him the same don’t-you-dare expression as earlier, so he pushed the plate of sandwiches her way, her hand grabbing the bigger of the two that were left before he’d even let go of the plate. ‘I made extra because I knew you’d be hungry. After the morning you’ve had, you’ll be craving some energy.’

They sat in silence while they ate everything in front of them. Drayce made some coffee when they’d finished, to stave off the fatigue that would soon be setting in. Sarah took her cup over to the fireplace and sat cross-legged in front of it, holding up the photograph of her mother close to the flames.
