Ezra licked his lips. “But… my hair. It would be nice to have it up, sometimes. And it does make me feel good when I wear it this way.” He said good the way other would say sexy or dangerous or powerful. “I don’t think anyone would find that disrespectful.”

“Disrespectful?” Emery’s smile at the idea of Ezra walking down the street like that became a scowl. “Your coven has issues with your hair?”

“No, no!” Ezra was scandalized. “No, of course not. But I’ve always felt I shouldn’t make anything too personal.”

“Personal?” Emery relaxed, a little. After all, Mrs. Dorchester wore beautiful head wraps all the time. “Ezra, you might dress conservatively but everything about your style is personal.”

Wooley began to flick his tail back and forth.

Ezra took his eyes off Emery to talk to his cat again. “Wooley, I know it’s easy to get carried away when he does that, but please try to have some dignity.”

Ignoring him, Wooley wiggled his butt and then jumped onto Emery’s lap. Emery froze. Wooley was a very large cat. He peered into Emery’s face without blinking, and he did indeed have a white patch of fur on his chest and throat, as well as big fluffy paws. With claws.

“Don’t let him tear into your pants,” Ezra warned, with a glare at his cat. “He knows better.”

Emery winced and said nothing while Wooley—claws out for balance—went around in circles three times before plopping down across his thighs. Wooley began to purr, a deep, rumbly vibration broadcasting his contentment.

Emery put a hand lightly on Wooley’s back and the purring grew louder. “I think… I think we’re okay if you want to keep decorating. He’s friendly, isn’t he?”

“Try shameless,” Ezra muttered.

Emery tried a gentle scratch behind the cat’s ears. Wooley started in with the claws again, moving his paws like he was kneading dough and sending pinpricks through Emery’s jeans that Emery couldn’t seem to mind. “How do he and Saturday get along?”

“They mostly ignore each other and then occasionally I find them cuddling. Don’t deny it, Wools.” Ezra was smug now. But he returned to his work, adding coloring or flavoring to his frosting and then making critical noises to himself as he stirred.

His experiment in cooking probably hadn’t been nearly so orderly or quiet. He was definitely the master here, for all that he claimed he couldn’t bake. The details were his focus. He poured white and black icing into the plastic squeeze bottles without spilling a drop or even staining his fingertips.

Then he began to hum softly as if he’d forgotten Emery was there.

Emery didn’t mind this time. He could stare all he liked and Ezra probably wouldn’t notice.

Ezra picked up the first bottle without any hesitation and then moved from cookie to cookie with quick, sure movements. The skulls were going to turn out beautifully, Emery had no doubt. Ezra was the sort of person who could get an owl and a cat to cuddle. That was just one of the amazing things he could do.
