Irene rose early the next morning after a sleepless night. The previous afternoon, she had eventually crept off to her room, shut the door, and stayed there. Now, only gray light, fragile and young, crept through her window. However, it was enough.

As she sat up in bed, she pulled back the sheet. A deep current of pain shot up inside of her as she rose to stand. She placed her hand there and stood up gently. Drops of dried blood stained her sleeping sarong. In the faint light of the room, with the door firmly closed, Irene could now have her privacy. It was now her moment.

The mirror on her small table was too high, meant to only reflect a face and neck. So she reached up and took it in her hands. She held it there for a moment. She saw her face in it. She had not intended to look at her face—that part of herself—and she paused when she saw her reflection. Normally, she might have thought she was tired. Her face was swollen under her eyes, from crying through the night and from the pain. Her lips were cracked. But mainly she looked at her own gaze, her young brown eyes staring back at her.

Irene brought the mirror lower and placed it on a chair and stood back so she could see her whole body. She unwrapped the sarong and let it fall to the floor. She took off her shirt, and before the mirror presented herself, her child’s body. Her hand went to touch herself there, but it paused on her stomach before tears returned, as she stood there alone.
