FAMILIAR THINGS

Having had a relatively light episode for specific references, here the show flings them at the screen with cocky abandon; indeed, there’s one to be found in the title of the episode itself: The Body was the name of the Stephen King novella later adapted for the screen as Stand By Me. However much the name may be appropriate for the episode, there’s little doubt it was also chosen as an explicit reference.

PRETTY. GOOD.

While there have been little touches throughout, that nod toward Steven Spielberg’s E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial,4 the scene where Mike, Dustin, and Lucas dress Eleven up in girl’s clothes and a blond wig, is the sort of nod that would crick your neck. In the movie, Elliot and his older brother dress their newfound alien friend up so that they can walk the streets with him.
