JACK

Vroom. Vroom. Jack’s Lexus LFA groaned as it tore through the 60 Freeway at one hundred miles per hour. Jack had perfected the art of not getting caught for speeding after following the advice of his best friend in Shanghai and installing a radar detector. It was incredibly cheap too—chump change at only $500.

Jack was in a particular road rage mood tonight. It was New Year’s Eve and his dad just decided to push back his trip to LA for Chinese New Year in a couple of weeks. Apparently, he needed to “take care of business in Shanghai.”

Jack called bullshit.

Jack’s older half-brother Sam was recently featured by Xinhua News40 for helping a blind elderly lady struggling with dementia find her family after she got lost in the streets of Shanghai. Apparently, the Chinese public, along with his dad, loved how Sam Zhou, with his bright orange Maserati sports car, stopped traffic on one of the busiest streets in China to give the old woman wandering in the middle of the road a free ride home—“Fu er dai41 has a Heart,” the news headlines read.

Sam probably set that whole photo shoot up and paid the old women to pretend to be helpless, he thought bitterly.

Coupled with Jack’s failures in the past year of getting kicked out of Exeter, he knew that in the race for who would take over his dad’s multi-billion-dollar garment business, he had lost to Sam already. His dad no longer cared about him, and his mom reminded him every day about it.

“I sacrificed my life for you,” she complained for the millionth time as Jack headed out the door to take his joy ride through the night. “How did I end up with a worthless son like you?”

He swore under his breath and pressed down even harder on the gas pedal and the memory. The car zoomed off of the freeway toward a shopping complex with a late-night hookah bar. He had never been so excited to meet some guys he previously knew back in the Shanghai clubbing circle. Thankfully, none of the people he was meeting were from Winchester.

He sniffed in distaste. He found his classmates to be so vile with their cheap vodka and nasty beer.

Jack and his much classier circle preferred Japanese whiskey. He leaned over and patted the four bottles of thousand-dollar Karuizawa Japanese whiskey in his passenger seat. A fifth bottle sat open in a cup holder as Jack picked it up and took a large swig. The whiskey washed down his throat, leaving a delightful burn in its wake.

Ah, Jack thought, feeling absolutely alive. Can’t wait to finish all of these tonight.

A red light up ahead switched from green, to yellow, and then to red. He cursed under his breath. He hated losing momentum while driving. Jack quickly swerved into an alleyway to cut across the parking lot instead.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the bottles of whiskey teeter on the edge of the passenger seat. Shit. He lunged over to catch them before they collided to the ground.
