Four

I’m sitting at the kitchenette table studying the enormous sex book Zoey gave me when Maddie enters the room.

“What are you doing?” she asks.

“Studying.”

“Studying what?”

She’s never seen me study anything, especially something that requires this large of a book.

I glance up at her. “Ever heard the term lunchbox?”

She furrows her brow. “In what context?”

“What about cleaning the kitchen?”

“You know I’ve been busy trying to get a nanny gig. And I didn’t think the kitchen was that messy.”

“Here’s an interesting one.” I point to the term in the book’s glossary. “Eating from the honey pot.”

“Is that some kind of new recipe book?”

I hold up the text so she can see the front cover: Rx for Sex.

“What are you doing with that?”

“A crash course in sex,” I explain. “So I can finally seduce Chris.”

She points to the tome. “Do you really think that’s going to help?”

I shrug. “It can’t hurt. Plus I got this sexy outfit from a former porn star.”

I rise and show off my new look. I have to admit that I’m slowly getting used to it.

“Do I want to know how that came about?”

“Not really.”

She points to the outfit. “You look good. Is Chris coming over here?”

I nod. “Our manager got us a meeting with a producer. We need to get ready for it.”

“And looking like that, you’re finally going to get some action.”

“That’s the plan.”

“So is Chris the one? You always said you were saving yourself for someone special.”

“He seems willing and able. I think at this point I need to go with a sure thing. And you said it yourself, it’s not like I have to have a conversation with him. I just want to take a ride on his joystick.”

There’s a knock on the door. Maddie and I look at each other.

“I’ll let the two of you have some privacy. I’ll be in my bedroom.”

“Would you take this with you?” I hand Maddie the book. “I don’t want Chris to see it.”

Maddie opens the text and starts to read it as she heads toward her bedroom. “Ever hear of a rusty trombone? Never mind. You don’t want to know.”

Once Maddie has disappeared I open the door. Chris’s eyes go wide as he looks me up and down.

“Holy Hell, you look hot.”

I grin. “Thanks. Come on in.”

Chris is about as laid back as guy’s come, but he dashes inside more quickly than I’ve ever seen him move.

“So how do you feel about pitching the producer tomorrow?”

He still hasn’t taken his eyes off of me. “No sweat. It’ll be a piece of cake.”

“Are you sure?” I eye him for emphasis. “This is a really important meeting.”

Chris waves off my concerns. “I’ve got it.”

“This meeting is with a man,” I remind him. “Not a woman.”

He frowns. “No problem.”

“You won’t be able to flirt your way through it.”

“Do you really think that’s the only reason Penny Wagner signed me?”

“Signed us,” I remind him. “Maybe not the only reason, but definitely the biggest reason.”

He places his hands on my shoulders and looks into my eyes.
