Voter representation for the 2003 referendum

× Chapter Twelve

The exterior wall of the courtyard was two, maybe two and a half meters tall. I couldn’t touch the top, but Sefu could if he jumped. On nice days, it shone in the sun, but even under today’s grey sky, it looked like home.

Sefu peered up at the wall. “The boys from Yamakasi could have climbed this easily,” he said. Yamakasi was a French parkour film Sefu had imported earlier this year. We’d watched it in his room along with a space cake apiece. It’d have been a cakewalk for them, so to speak.

He wrinkled his nose. “The thing is, barbed wire is strung across the top of this wall. Even if someone got up there, they’d have to stand on the barbed wire. Cirque du Soleil does something like that. But let’s say the murderer is not an internationally renowned gymnast. Let’s say that instead, they try to stand on the wall-top with both feet on one side of the barbed wire and try to not get their knees shredded. Or maybe they stand with one foot on each side of the wire, straddling it, standing just on the very edges of the wall.”

Cirque du Soleil was looking like the more likely option. I decided to ignore the problem. “If they did manage to move along the top of the wall somehow, they could climb into the house through that window on the north wall. The window at ninety degrees to the one overlooking the courtyard”

“Yeah, but the barbed wire would have stopped them. How about this: Cowardly Winston is correct. They climbed the pipe, and then if they had an old carpet or something, they could have got past a few feet of the wire, like in Fight Club. Then it’s easy to get into the house.” He walked over to the corner of the house and inspected the drainpipe that ran up to the roof.

“That’s no good,” I said, “you can’t climb drainpipes. Cowardly Winston is wrong or lying.”

“Why not?” Sefu asked.

“Most drainpipes are light, hollow and plastic,” I said. “The bolts that secure them to a wall aren’t designed to support a person. If someone tried it, the pipe would either snap or pull away from the wall.”

“Hm,” said Sefu. “There’s just one thing.” He knocked on the pipe with his knuckles. “This pipe is metal.”

My eyebrows shot up. “Well, that’s different.” And I joined Sefu in staring at the pipe. I looked up the length of the pipe to where it reached the top of the wall.

“I don’t think this is a drainpipe,” I said. “Look up there. I think it connects to the water tank in the attic, or some other system.”

“Do you think one of us could climb it?” Sefu asked.

“Of course. Xia, Vince and I could, for sure.” I shuddered. “You know what I mean. Gus, Mel and Paula might be able to. Maybe even Liam if he was desperate.”

He stared at me for a moment.
