Camille was surprised to find the precinct quite active; five different officers were milling about, two on phone calls while the other three went about various tasks around the small building. Sheriff Wireman was at the center of it all, moving from desk to desk as he checked in with his officers.
When he spotted Camille and Palmer making their way back into the building, he held up a hand and gave them both a hold on a second gesture as he finished chatting with the same younger-looking cop Camille had seen in the office earlier in the day.
âYou think this is about the missing personâs report?â Palmer whispered.
Camille only shrugged, wondering if Debbie Herbert and the missing airboat had turned up around Lee Creek after all. After a few seconds, Wireman hurried over to them with a look on his face that almost came off as excitement.
âWhatâs the commotion over?â Camille asked.
âBelieve it or not, itâs all rather new and it links up with your case in a minor way. It turns out that as word of the missing personâs case got out, so did word of the two murders youâre looking into. It turns out, one of the men we know for sure is in this little chapter of the KKK youâre going to look in on tonight said something about it on Facebook. The post was flagged and taken down, but the State PD sent us a screenshot of it.â
He pulled out his cellphone and brought the picture up. The man in question was Jackson Green, according to his Facebook profile. The post heâd shared had been exclusive to a group called Keep the Kountry Klean. It showed a picture of Megan Keenan, taken from an online article on her murder. There was no link to the story, just a headline. But the post was chilling all the same. Green had posted: âGood. One less piece of garbage we need to take care of. If you did this, a big thanks to you.â
âAnd this stand-up gentleman is a local?â Palmer said.
âHe is. And I know for a fact that heâs one of the men that Chris associated with. But the comments, which I didnât get a screenshot of, had a response from another localâone of Greenâs friends. A guy they call Scooter. Scooter Nash. It was probably just big-time talk, trying to look important, but he said something along the lines of âIâm not saying I didnât do itâ or some such nonsense.â
The night-time spying session now seemed more important than ever, especially with dusk settling in comfortably outside. Even if these men had nothing to do with the murders, there was definitely the opportunity to get names and leads out of them. But even then, waiting to head back out on the river at night, Camille went back to how theyâd gotten the Klan lead in the first place. There had been comments made to Megan Keenan by someone associated with the group just before she and her friends had taken the boat out on the water.
