Chapter Six

THE NEXT morning, Dallas left the safety of his bed before Raleigh was awake. He couldn’t stand the thought of having to say good-bye to Raleigh before he left. He didn’t want to see the sad eyes or the miserable twist of his lips. The devastation. Raleigh was very good at that look, and it broke Dallas’s heart every single time.

By the time he made it to the eatery, the group was waiting for him, except for Janey and Cade, although he wasn’t sure if they were coming or not. Rue had her belt of knives and one gun, her face as hard as stone as she watched him expectantly.

“Are you chickening out on us?” Rue asked, eyebrow raised.

Dallas glared at her. “No, I’m not.”

“Are you sure?” she asked again, a smirk on her overly pink lips. “Your girlfriend didn’t want you to go.”

He pointed at her, sending her a warning glare. “Don’t be a smartarse. If you insult him again, you can fuck off.”

That seemed to sober her. She exhaled. “I’m sorry.”

“No, you’re not,” Dallas snapped, grabbing his gun off Kit, another pain in his arse. Let it be said that even though their world had crashed around them and they needed each other to survive, humans still didn’t get along while living with each other.

“He’s a bit of a pussy,” Kit laughed, peering around as though he was waiting for others to snigger at his joke. No one did. Instead, a couple of them glared at him.

Dallas’s temper rose, and he couldn’t stop himself from grabbing Kit by the throat and throwing him against the wall. He bared his teeth at the younger man, ignoring the wide eyes and gasp of surprise. He’d never used violence before now.

“Call him that again, Kit. I dare you.”

He felt hands scrabbling at his arm, but he ignored them. Kit had insulted Raleigh in a way that wasn’t acceptable. He’d defend his husband to the death if he had to.

“Boss! Stop!”

Kit was choking, his face pale as he clawed at Dallas’s hand on his neck. His breaths were shallow, sharp, and he was begging with small whimpers. Dallas stared at him, his veins on fire with anger, until the reality of what he was doing finally set in. He dropped Kit, watching as the younger man fell to the ground with deep, grateful intakes of air.

When he’d calmed, he glanced around at the group of people. “No one insults Raleigh, am I clear?”

The shocked faces nodded, none of them brave enough to argue with him.

“I warned each of you when you joined this group that Raleigh is my main priority.” Dallas gritted his teeth. “He will always be my main priority.”

Kit gasped for air near Dallas’s feet, whimpering again, but Dallas ignored him.

Dallas nodded and strode over to the table that held his gun. He threw the strap of his sniper over his shoulder before he grabbed two pistols. They went into his belt. The noise behind him grew again, and he heard Kit whispering over the incident.
