CHAPTER 24

Boyd was only 30 minutes into the drive to Emmettsville when his pager notified him that he had a message from L.T.’s mother. The 911 on the pager meant the message was urgent. Boyd was driving his Ford F-150 truck while Jessica was following behind him in L.T.’s Jeep. At the next town, he pulled over at a gas station and pulled up in front of a payphone.

Jessica exited the Jeep and asked, “Legend paged you?”

“His mom did. She also typed 911.”

“Oh boy, what has he done now?” said Jessica with a sly smile.

“I’ve been thinking the same thing. What could be worse than the foot chase? That seems like enough trouble for one day.”

Neither were prepared for what Ingrid had to tell them. L.T. was a wanted man. She informed them that he was going to find a place to hole up until they arrived and would get back to them after he had found a safe place. L.T. advised them to be careful and proceed with their original plan. He also gave them a list of clothes to bring.

Boyd hung up and turned to face Jessica. She looked worried. “We should just go to Washington,” she said. “His car can sit there a few more days.”

Boyd argued that getting in at one in the morning versus early tomorrow afternoon was not going to help L.T. in any way. “Plus, did you see what he was asking for? He knows he’s in trouble, and he wants different outfits to create disguises. You might want to do the same thing, Jessica. You’re too tall and too pretty to walk around unnoticed.”

Jessica let his words soak in without argument. He knew she would be sensible. Within minutes, they were back in their vehicles on the way to Emmettsville.

It was mid-afternoon when they arrived at the car lot. Jessica and Boyd both parked in front of the building and went inside. Eric spotted Jessica and joined them quickly. They explained they were there for the Cobra. Eric agreed to unlock the back garage door so that Jessica could get the car.

Eric squinted his eyes and wrinkled his brow at Boyd. “You look familiar. Have we met?”

“Last year, briefly. I was driving an old Mustang.”

“Dark green, ‘68 or ‘69. Yeah, I thought you looked familiar. You with Dr. McCain?”

“Sort of. I’m Miss Carmichael’s private investigator.”

“How’s all that going?” asked Eric. Boyd shrugged as to say who knows. “I’m asking because I got a call from Washington, D.C. a little while ago.”

Boyd and Jessica perked up. She said, “Oh, what about.”

“It seems the cops have the Javelin sitting in their impound lot. They traced the dealer tag back to us and wanted to know how Dr. McCain came about driving it.”

“What did you tell them?”

“Just what we discussed; he’s test driving it for a week.”

“And they bought it?” asked Boyd.

“I’m not sure. They did ask me if I knew where he was. If I knew where you were, young lady. All that kind of stuff.
