After dropping Marcia at the court of appeals, Second Appellate, Harley returned to her office and walked down the hall to Lieutenant Chall’s office, where she stuck her head inside the open door.

“Been wondering where you went, Ellis,” he growled from inside. “Come on in and bring me up to speed. I take it you met with Ordañez?”

She took a seat and shook her head. “I saw him, but the undercover bit was a farce, LT. We’ve got a snitch in here.”

“He knew you were LAPD?”

“He played along at first, then he sprung it on me. He knew everything. That I have a daughter who’s on the street, he knew about my in-laws, my mom and dad, and he threatened to kill them all.”

“Kill them all? Because you tried to run a play on him?”

“Yes. He’s in a rage about his brother. Evidently we put him in Q.”

“Who did?”

“LAPD. Drug bust, maybe an entrapment, maybe not. Anyway, Ordañez’s brother is in San Quentin on six consecutive drug buys. He’ll be in his eighties before he’s eligible for parole. Ordañez wants him released.”

“Or he’ll kill Wendy. And your family. That was the risk, Harley. You chose to ignore it.”

“I chose to try to find Spielman’s killer, you mean.” Harley felt her face go hot. She didn’t appreciate how he’d said she chose to ignore the danger. “I was doing my job.”

“Harley, your job was already done. Danny Sullivan already had an arrest on the case, remember? You thought it was a bad arrest and you wanted to go after Ordañez instead. Let’s keep our facts straight, Sergeant.”

She sighed. He was right. She had wanted to make an alternative arrest. Or at least investigate the possibility.

“So where are we with Mickey Loden in the Valley? Are you still thinking he nailed Spielman?”

“Yes, even though Reuben Ordañez made it clear that he killed Ira J. Spielman. Ordañez is lying about killing Spielman. Bastard.”

“What about kidnapping of his daughter. Ordañez again?”

“Sure. All the way. The kidnapping case begins and ends with Ordañez. The murder case? I don’t believe a thing Ordañez told me. I’m honestly thinking Loden did it as payback for Spielman getting Ordañez to kidnap Loden’s daughter.”

“God, I’d love to bust his nut. How do we get him to come into the US, Harley?”

“That is the sixty-four-thousand-dollar question, LT. But I’m working on it.”

His eyes narrowed. “What about the brother at Q? You’re not thinking about springing him, are you?”

Harley’s face burned. It was a physical response that was involuntary, one that always happened when someone saw what was really going on with her. “No, I’m not thinking of springing him. Although I did wonder about entrapment on his case.” There, she’d said it. No reason to keep it a secret at this point because she’d already told her lieutenant way more than she had ever intended, going in. He knew the whole deal now.

“Let me save you some time. Entrapment won’t win you a new case in the Second Appellate, Harley. Appeals hates entrapment cases.
