Chapter 13

Chinese Proverb: Do not remove a fly from a friend’s forehead with a hatchet.

Rod had already left two messages for her today but Mei Jing didn’t know what to do. She was more confused than ever after last night. The overwhelmingly sensible part of her knew she should tell Rod and tell him now. He’d put so much time, money and emotional energy into finding his rescuer. He desperately wanted to know and Mei Jing felt increasingly worse for not telling him. But the thought of telling him didn’t make her feel any better.

She’d been indebted to someone before and the feeling of owing someone but knowing you would never be able to repay them was one that still made her squirm. She’d owed Kevin for a debt that wasn’t even hers. She’d felt uncomfortable at the time. Trapped. She wouldn’t wish those feelings on anyone, especially Rod.

So she couldn’t tell him and she couldn’t not tell him. So what choice did that leave her with. To stop seeing him? Again this wasn’t appealing. It was so good to be with him. So easy and yet exciting at the same time.

She tried to remember what it had felt like to be with Kevin. Her parents had been so grateful to Kevin’s dad—and Kevin’s dad would always half-joke about a mysterious ‘Big Favour’ her dad owed him. Mei Jing knew that, sub-consciously, part of the reason she said yes to Kevin’s proposal was to try and clear the ‘Big Favour’ debt.

Kevin was clever, finishing an IT postgrad at Uni and they had a lot in common. According to the Chinese community they were perfect for each other. But thinking about the limited time that Rod and Mei Jing had already spent alone together, it was very different. Mei Jing had rarely spent time alone with Kevin. If they were alone they tended to fill the space with TV or a movie. They spent heaps of time together with friends. They’d play golf with their fathers, they’d go out to dinner with their mutual Chinese friends or with their parents, but rarely had time alone just the two of them.

Both of them had been living at home and Kevin wanted to wait till they were married to sleep together. Mei Jing had been surprised but thinking now about her attraction, her physical attraction, towards Rod, she knew she’d never felt this way about Kevin.

It was so different with Rod.

She’d spent the morning pottering about her flat achieving very little, alternating between worrying about whether to tell him and day-dreaming about his kiss. He was a very good kisser. Such a personable guy. Cute. A very good kisser.

Her phone startled her out of a happy memory; a play by play sequence of the events leading up to the arrival of the pizza last night. One of her favourite moments.

She glanced at the number. Her mother. With a sigh she picked up the phone and wandered out to her balcony. Settling into the deep chair, she tried to relax and prepare herself for the onslaught.
