Chapter 8

Plan B

THE POLICE WON'T BE A PROBLEM, Brandon thought. It's our house, after all. We're just having a party. It was a free country, wasn't it?

There came a polite knocking at the door.

Brandon drew himself up and said, "I'll do the talking."

Dylan came up next to him and said, "Do anything you want, bro, but if those cops catch a whiff of your breath, they'll bust you for sure."

The knocking became louder and more insistent.

"Okay," Brandon said. He knew Dylan was right, but that didn't make it any easier to give up being the responsible one. "Just don't let them in."

Brandon retreated to the foot of the stairway and sat down a little harder than he'd intended. He looked around for his cup and couldn't find it. By this time Brenda had opened the front door and was standing there next to Dylan. Facing them were a pair of cops—one old enough to be their father, and the other more like college age.

Brightly, Brenda said, "Hi, officers. Is there a problem?"

The old cop said, "Is this your house?" He sounded like a no-nonsense type, maybe with kids of his own whom he kept on a very short leash.

"Yes, sir," Brenda said. Brandon appreciated how good she was at sounding polite.

"Are your parents home?"

"Not at the moment. But they'll be back soon."

"Yeah," the old cop said. "Like about Sunday night."

The young cop smiled and asked, "Did it occur to you that most of your neighbors would probably not care to hear 'Jamajamarama' at this hour?"
