Chapter 9: Home for The Holidays

“Okay,” Morgan said as he attempted to cram a sweater into a cardboard box that seemed, at least to him, much too small for it. “Why are we doing this?”

“Well, you barely are,” Robert replied, glancing over at him with knitted brows. “Haven't you ever wrapped a present before?”

“No, actually, I haven't,” he explained. “I usually just pull the price tag off and then drop it in one of those present bags. And, anyway, I need a bigger box. There's no way a sweater this big is going to fit in a box this small!”

“Yes, it will,” Azure asserted, rolling her eyes.

She took the garment in question from the young man's hands, quickly folded it, and laid it in the box.

“It's just that easy,” she smiled.

“That's not easy,” he replied, shaking his head. “As far as I can tell, you just cast some kind of shrink spell on it.”

“Well, I didn't,” she laughed. “I just folded it.”

“Female sorcery,” he insisted. “But, either way, you still haven't answered my question, Rob.”

“No, I haven't,” the traveler agreed. “Part of the reason for that, is that I'm trying to teach you to think. Ask yourself the question, Morgan. What possible reason could I have for making you wrap up that sweater?”

“Well, considering its size,” the young man began, “I can only guess that it's for Vox.”

“So far, so good.”

“And, what with the sort of themed wrapping paper, I would suppose that exchanging presents is part of the Calcin's Day celebrations.”

“That's two for two.”

“Which, I guess, would kind of explain the baby toys you bought; since you said they were going to have kids at some point.”

“Keep going.”

“Nah. I'm done. That's as far as I can get. It's obvious you're going to give 'em presents, but you bought Vox like three or four sweaters. So, you're either really bad at holiday shopping, or there's something more that I don't get.”

“Or both,” Robert pointed out.

“That's true,” Morgan admitted. “But, I got the feeling that it's more on the I don't get it side of things.”

“You've got good instincts.”

“So, what's your plan, then?”

“The sooner we finish wrapping these gifts, the sooner you'll find out.”

“Right...” the young man nodded.

Just over an hour later, all of the presents that had been purchased in Never Never Land were sitting in a neat pile on the floor of the cargo bay. With this taken care of, Robert moved the ship ahead in time to the nearest Calcin's Day. In order to make sneaking into Vox's place a bit easier, each of the crew then put on a stealth belt. Then they each grabbed up a number of packages that the traveler pointed out.

The band made their way silently - and invisibly - to the Qwell’s home. Robert rang the bell and, seconds later, Vox opened the door, staring into the nothing beyond.

“Look out, bro,” the traveler said, “it's freezing out here and you know how I feel about the cold.”

“Rob?” Vox asked with a smile.

“No,” he replied sarcastically.
