If you’re distressed by the number of unfinished tasks piling up in your planner, and you’re too frazzled to even sort out through the mess, then the Most Important Tasks method will be your new best friend. The idea behind this strategy is to eliminate, delegate, and simplify activities, chores, and duties that look complex and can be mentally exhausting to think about. Sit down with a notebook and pull up your calendar. Make a list of everything that needs to be done in a day and make a note of any deadlines that need to be met. You’ll begin to observe that each task is different from the others in its difficulty level and the amount of time it takes to get done. Rank each task from the easiest to the most difficult and time-consuming. Often, a lot of small chores accumulate over time and trick your brain into thinking that you’ve got a lot to do. Group these together and set them aside for the time being. Now, return your attention to the big tasks and try to eliminate the ones which seem unnecessary and do not add to your happiness and fulfillment. It might seem like you’re being selfish, but the truth is that you need to learn how to say no to things that become a burden on your schedule. Try narrowing the list until you’re down to three, absolutely essential tasks per day. When you’re done, schedule a time-frame for each task. In this way, you’re imposing deadlines on yourself and sending signals to your mind to switch into productivity mode. The small set of easy tasks can be done in between the breaks you’ll take after the completion of each major activity.

Reward yourself after completing each milestone so that you can condition your brain into maintaining a similar routine and work-ethic in the future. In this small, simple way, you not only learn to declutter your mind until the to-do list doesn’t appear so daunting but also inculcate the amount of discipline needed to progress in your professional life.

Let’s talk about the big changes that you can make in your daily life to improve concentration and focus. You’ve learned a lot about the small things that can help remove distractions from your immediate surroundings, but a big part of finding your passion is exercising self-restraint and training your mind to move past these distractions and focus on the big picture—your dreams and goals.
