Chapter 27

It was dark and time to go. “Remember, we have to walk three blocks to get to my car. I’ll have my arm around you, and my gun will be right up tight against your ribs and hidden under my jacket. Any sudden moves and the first shot goes off. The second bullet will be to your head, so don’t try to get away with anything. When we get to my Cadillac, you’ll sit in the front and drive, and I’ll climb in the back. My gun will be aimed at your head all the way to the cabin where my Bella is. Don’t get lost. Got it?”

She nodded.

“Speak! I asked you a question.”

“Yes, I understand. I’ve got it. I won’t try anything. You’ll be with Bella in a couple of hours.”

He looked around the apartment to make sure he hadn’t left any evidence of being there. He glanced at Max, whose head had fallen against his right shoulder. The blood that had splattered on the wall was beginning to dry. They left the apartment and walked to the busy restaurant area of the city. She did what he told her. She stayed close to him and didn’t falter. They walked past happy couples who were dressed up and on their way to dinner.

“Smile. Act like you’re enjoying yourself. Make it real, or they’ll remember if you don’t.” He brought his face in close to hers and gave her a kiss on the cheek even as he pressed his gun a little bit harder against her ribs. “The car is parked around the corner of this next block. I’ll stay nice and close when I open the car door for you.”

They got in his Cadillac Escalade, with Lila in the driver’s seat and Lucero in the back. He brushed her blond hair with the barrel of his gun to remind her how important it was to drive carefully. She drove within the speed limit and did exactly what he told her. Within forty-five minutes, they were at the edge of town on Mount Ramsey Road.

“Here’s where we turn off onto the logging roads. We’ve got about thirty miles of dirt and potholes before we get to the cabin. You were right. The full moon is lighting up the roads pretty brightly.”

“That’s fine. Take it slow, and don’t get stuck or veer off the road.”

“What are you going to do with me when you get Bella?”

“Have you thought of a perfect plan to make it seem like we’re the heroes who found both kids?”

“I’m not sure how to plan anything like that.”

“Let’s just say it’s really important for you to think of something. Life-changing or life-sustaining, take your pick.”

“How about if I say you and I are a couple and someone, some mystery person, slid a map under your door. You’re staying at a hotel, right?”

“Yeah, the same hotel that Bella was taken from.”

She glanced at him through the rearview mirror as she continued to tell him her plan. “Okay, so we were in the hotel room, and a person slid a map under the door.
