Chapter Fourteen

#xa0;

Damien followed Jenson into the shop, eager to be the first one behind him should anything kick off. He smelled Maria—weird how he could do that now he knew exactly what she was—and his stomach churned.

Going by memory from when he’d visited the shop before, he stalked up and down the two short aisles. No one was down here other than them, so he trailed Jenson through a door behind the counter and into a storage area. Crates of food and drinks stood in piles beside each other, against the walls and also in the middle of the room. Damien and the others prowled around the central pile, Damien’s nerves on edge in case someone leaped out at them and started a fight. He was ready to shift in a millisecond.

Nothing and no one.

He studied the rest of the room. A set of stairs crouched in the far right corner, and they traipsed up them to more storage rooms. Boxes of goods filled the spaces there, too, but absolutely nothing weird popped out at them.

“So it’s just Maria and Annie working alone, do you think?” Richard asked.

“We’re early, so maybe the man won’t turn up until later.” Damien shook his head at the situation they’d found themselves in. Life had been going along as ordinarily as it always had been until Brett had gone missing. When a catastrophe hit, it made sure to do so in a spectacular manner, didn’t it? Bloody hell. “Or the man might not turn up at all. They could have just asked him to make that phone call to me.”

Jenson shifted back to human. “I see by your memories that he didn’t sound local. Whoever he is, he isn’t a lifelong resident around here.” He sighed as though stymied. “So what kind of man would agree to make a phone call like that?”

“A bastard. A vampire bastard.” Richard scratched his belly, the sound of nails against skin loud in the quiet. “Shit. My damn wolf wants out.”

“Hold him back,” Damien said.

“I’m trying, but he’s a stubborn sod, you know that.” Richard grimaced.

“A bit like you, then.” Jenson chuckled.

His comment released the tension as everyone took a moment to laugh with him. Then the enormity of it all slammed back into Damien and he shivered.

“Now we wait,” he said. “Two of us in this room, two at the front so we can see anyone coming?”

“Good idea. We’ll take the front,” Jenson said and left the room.

Damien went with him and found Jenson standing to the side of the front storage room window, peering out. Only one side of his face would be visible to anyone loitering outside or going past in a car. Damien moved to the other side, giving them two directions to watch at the same time.

The cottage opposite drew his attention, though. It huddled in the darkness, and he racked his brain trying to remember who lived there. Ah, an old lady had occupied it when he’d first stumbled into the village, but he hadn’t seen her in a long time.
