The drive to the Double 0 was made in silence. Iris glanced at her partner. “You know we have to have a real dialogue about Scott.”

“We’ve got to get Captain Finely a protective detail.” Toni said. “He’s definitely on the killer’s hit list, and he will need somebody to watch his back, but I don’t think he’ll comply...” Iris looked at Toni. Toni did not want to talk about Iris’s date with Scott.

“Okay, I’ll confront the captain.” Iris said.

When Iris and Toni stepped off the elevator, they caught Captain Finely heading toward his office. “There’s the captain, I’ll go and talk to him now.” Iris said. Iris called out Finely’s name as she trotted down the hall. She stepped into his office. Twenty seconds later, Captain Finely threw Iris out. “Do I look like I can’t handle myself, detective?” Finely shouted at Iris. She stood in front of Finely’s door as he slammed it in her face. She marched past Toni, who was standing in front of Beam’s door. “What the hell happened?” Toni asked. Iris didn’t answer; she walked into her office and closed the door.

Fifteen minutes had passed before Toni returned to her office. “I brought Beam up to speed.” She said as she sat at her desk.

“I didn’t even get the chance to explain to Captain Finely. As soon as I said protective detail, he threw me out.” Iris glanced at Toni. She wanted to ask Toni if Scott had said anything about their date, but she didn’t. If Scott had said anything, Iris knew Toni would’ve told her. Two hours later Iris’s cell phone went off, Casper was calling. “Whatcha got, Casper?”

“Listen, I’d stopped by Hahn Le’s apartment and had a talk with some of her neighbors. Then I went by N.Y.U. where she studied Computer Science and had a talk with some of Hahn’s girlfriends. She was seeing an older man. Her uncle had gotten him an apartment in Little Saigon. The uncle is out of the country. But I found out where the boyfriend lives, I’m parked across the street from his apartment right now.”

Twenty-five minutes later, Iris parked her ride in front of 198 Grand St. right next to a bakery. “Hey, Iris.” Casper said. “We’re going to need an interpreter.” He said as Iris and Toni stepped out of Iris’s vehicle. “I tried to talk to the owner of this bakery here, but she doesn’t speak any English.”

“Okay—”

“Wait a minute,” Toni said. “I speak a little Vietnamese.” She said a few words in the language.

Iris and Casper both stared at Toni.

“Where in the world did you learn how to speak Vietnamese?” Casper asked.

“I speak several languages, Casper. Including Russian, German, and French.”

“I knew that, but I didn’t know you spoke Vietnamese.” Iris said.

“Well now you know.” The owner of the bakery, a short Vietnamese woman who looked to be in her forties, told Toni that she has never seen the man’s face. That he only came out at night with a hat or a hoodie on his head, covering his face.
