“Why did you go through that whole drawn-out conversation with me when you already knew who I was? What was the point of that?” I shook my head while staring at Macar.

“It helped to hear where you were coming from, and I wanted to see how much you would truly divulge,” she replied.

“Apparently I didn’t win you over, or I wouldn’t be in this position.”

She shook her head. “On the contrary. You would be dead if we didn’t have that talk. It allowed me to see another side of you. A side I think can still be convinced of the beauty of the party and our ties to the JSS.”

“I think you’re confusing me with someone who cares. I’m here to do a job. That’s all. I’m not a politician who needs convincing. I’m just a hired hand. That’s all!” I shouted.

Macar pulled her arm back and struck me across the face. “A hired hand? One who killed my cousin and now plans on killing one of the brightest leaders our country has ever known? That’s not a hired hand.” Her nose was touching mine. “You are an assassin, plain and simple.” She spit in my face and stormed out of the room.

Winston folded his arms and clenched his teeth. “Okay, don’t say I didn’t warn you. These people can be pretty convincing.” He nodded. “C’mon. Get up.”

He whistled for the two guards from before, and they dragged me back to the van. I stayed silent for the trip that lasted a couple hours, paying attention to the terrain so I could recount as much as possible. Wherever they were taking me, it was much warmer than Istanbul. The van’s air conditioning was cranked all the way up as the sun beat down on the windshield.

Somewhere along the ride, my sheer exhaustion caught up with me. I awoke with the two laughing loudly. A few minutes later, they parked the van. The guard in the passenger seat yelled, “Get up. They’re waiting for you.”

The guard pulled me out the van door, and even in the early evening, the sun was scorching. I could feel my tongue sticking to the roof of my mouth. I hadn’t had anything to eat or drink since early in the morning. I peered out at the land in front of me with no clue where I was. There was some scattered brush, but it was mostly barren land.

The guards led me to an isolated hilly area surrounded by large boulders at the base. There was a brown canopy in the area they pointed to. I walked under the canopy and through a large tent. A few men squatted in the corner, dressed in fatigues and sporting long beards. They were drinking what looked like black coffee.

One of the guards pointed toward the center of the tent. I sat down with my legs folded and stared at the ground.

The men in fatigues continued their conversation. Winston and Macar stood on the door end of the tent, talking with one another.
